The final Group 1 of the Sydney Autumn Carnival brings together the key sprint and mile form lines, and history says the TJ Smith Stakes is once again the dominant guide.
Seven of the last nine winners have come through that race, while four runners back up from the 2026 edition, including Giga Kick, who produced the best last-start figure in the field when runner-up, going 14 lengths faster than standard benchmark.
That form line is impossible to ignore given Jimmysstar won this race last year, Magic Time took out the 2024 edition, and Giga Kick was the 2023 winner, meaning the last three winners all clash again on Saturday. Giga Kick looks ideally suited rising back to 1400m, while Jimmysstar returns to his pet trip after again warming into his work late in the TJ.
The market has gravitated to Angel Capital, and there is plenty to like. His William Reid Stakes runner-up was full of merit after racing in restricted room before producing the fastest last 200m of the meeting, finishing 12.6 lengths faster than standard.
The return to 1400m looks ideal, especially given he improved sharply at this stage of his spring campaign when chasing home Jimmysstar in the CF Orr Stakes over this trip. Fourth-up, on a dry Randwick surface, this looks the race Chris Waller has had in mind.
The race shape also creates intrigue around Beiwacht, who was brave when ridden too aggressively in the George Ryder over 1500m. Back to 1400m on dry ground — the same setup that saw him win the Golden Rose — he gets conditions to suit. Fangirl adds another layer fresh, and her first-up Randwick profile over this distance is elite, while Lazzura comes through a history-defying Coolmore Classic win and profiles to peak third-up at weight-for-age.
There are a total of 13 contenders in action with Chris Waller holding a strong hand with five runners, while three will be wearing the Godolphin blue, incuding Beiwacht, Tom Kitten and Pericles. The 2025 Melbourne Cup (3200m) winner, Half Yours, returns for the first time this autumn and adds another layer of intrigue.
2026 All Aged Stakes Speed Map
The 1400m Randwick start with the rail out 7m often rewards horses that can land up and in through the first 300m before the dog-leg, and this year’s map suggests that tactical positioning will be critical.
From the speed map, Headley Grange and Royal Patronage look the two most likely to press forward, while Beiwacht from barrier 2 lands beautifully just behind or outside the lead. That gives Nash Rawiller every chance to control the race at the right point after the colt was overused last start.
Angel Capital maps ideally from barrier 4, likely finding the 1-1 or one pair further back, which looks the sweet spot given the expected tempo. Importantly, Giga Kick from barrier 7 should land right on his back, making him one of the biggest map winners in the race.
The trickier runners are Jimmysstar (12) and Fangirl (8), who may need genuine speed from the outside brigade to bring them into it. If the tempo slackens through the middle stages, it brings the on-speed runners — particularly Beiwacht and Angel Capital — right into the finish.
Lazzura from barrier 3 is the sleeper map horse. She lands midfield with cover, saves every inch of ground, and gets the chance to produce her turn of foot at the exact right time.
Overall, the map strongly favours Angel Capital, Beiwacht, Giga Kick and Lazzura, all of whom draw to settle in the first six.
2026 All Aged Stakes Best Bet
Angel Capital looks set to peak fourth-up at exactly the right trip.
His William Reid run was enormous given he was held up before savaging the line late, and the rise to 1400m is a major plus considering how well he measured up behind Jimmysstar in the CF Orr Stakes at this stage of his previous campaign.
He draws perfectly in barrier 4, gets James McDonald aboard, should enjoy the right run just off the speed, and importantly appears to be going a fraction better than Jimmysstar this preparation.
With the TJ Smith horses coming off hard runs and several key rivals drawn awkwardly, this looks the ideal setup for him to land his breakthrough Group 1.
2026 All Aged Stakes Value Bet
Lazzura appeals as the clear value runner in the market.
Chris Waller deliberately scratched her from the Queen Of The Turf last week to save her for this, and the move to 1400m at weight-for-age looks ideal after her outstanding Coolmore Classic win carrying 58kg, where she ran 11.5 lengths faster than standard benchmark.
The switch away from handicap conditions is a major edge, while third-up is historically her peak stage, matching the point where she produced a career-best figure in the Toorak Handicap.
Barrier 3 is a perfect draw, allowing her to settle just behind the main speed and conserve energy before launching late.
At double-figure odds, she looks the horse the market has underestimated.
