Kingston Town Classic History

First run in 1976 when named the Malboro 50,000, the Kingston Town Classic has undergone many name changes in its relatively short history. It has been called the Kingston Town Classic since 2007 and it has been run over 1800m since 2004.

Race organisers have changed distances from 1600m-2000m but the 1800m has stuck. Since then there have been more middle-distance winners as opposed to stayers taking out the Kingston Town Classic.

Four runners have won the Kingston Town Classic twice and Kingston Town was a famous winner in 1982. He subsequently got the race named in his honour.

The weight-for-age contest is always hotly contested as it’s worth $1 million and comes at a time when many of Australia’s best thoroughbreds are at the end of their campaigns after a long spring.

Kingston Town Classic Field

The field for the Kingston Town Classic is released on the Wednesday morning prior to the race.

We will have the field when it’s confirmed by RISA.

Kingston Town Classic Form Guide

The local runners have been performing well in recent years. Perfect Reflection (2015), Pounamu (2017) and Arcadia Queen (2018) were all locally-trained winners of the Kingston Town Classic.

Unlike the Railway Stakes, the locals have a much better record. Famous Perth names such as Ihtsahymn and Luckygray have taken out the Kingston Town Classic.

We wouldn’t totally discount the Melbourne and Sydney form, but the momentum is definitely in favour of the Perth runners and they often get conditions to suit.

It has been won twice on many occasions, so look for a potential repeat winner when making your selections.
