Canterbury Stakes Bookmaker Offers
The following bookmaker are offering Canterbury Stakes bonus bet deals.
Canterbury History
The Canterbury Stakes was first run as a Group 1 in only 2013 when it was taken out by Pierro, which has since had a successful stud career.
Many Canterbury Stakes winners have gone on to be champion sprinters, including the likes of Sky High, Manikato, Shogun Lodge and More Joyous.
Throughout its course of history, the Canterbury Stakes has changed location on many occasions. It was originally run at Canterbury – as the name suggests, but was then changed to the likes of Rosehill and now Randwick.
A reason for the move to Randwick in 2014 was because Canterbury is deemed unfit to host Group 1 racing. It’s now a part of Sydney Autumn Carnival, which kicks off before The Championships in April.
The timing of the Canterbury Stakes suits the sprinters who are looking to progress to races such as the TJ Smith Stakes later in the carnival.
Since becoming a Group 1, it has been taken out by some of Australia’s best sprinting thoroughbreds. It’s a race many connections want to win and punters love betting on it.
Canterbury Stakes Field
The field for the Canterbury Stakes won’t be confirmed until early March when RISA releases the final field, barrier draw and weights.
The Canterbury Stakes field consists of around 14 runners.
The field is determined by prize money, class and various other handicapping factors.
Canterbury Stakes Form Guide
Form out of the Canterbury Stakes lines up well for later in the year. Many winners from the Canterbury Stakes have gone on to run well during The Championships.
That’s because it’s not only a good lead-up fitness wise, but having experience at Randwick is a major positive.
Punters don’t often see the form hold up well during the Melbourne Spring Carnival later in the year with the sprinters, but the middle-distance winners have great form.
The likes of Happy Clapper and Le Romain went on to win races at longer distances.
Favourites have a good record in the Canterbury Stakes.
