Formerly known as the Kennedy Mile and Cantala Stakes, the race has long been a great form guide for events in the following autumn and even throughout the Melbourne Spring Carnival. 

Winners such as All Silent, Boban, Le Romain and Turn Me Loose have continued on from their Flemington wins with more success. 

When looking for the Champions Mile winner, punters should look for the battle-hardened types which have been exposed to the top level of racing in the past and will handle all the pressure that comes with running this race. 

Champions Mile Final Field

The field for the Cantala Stakes will be confirmed in the days leading up to the race. We will update the field when it’s released by RISA.

Champions Mile History

The race has undergone more name changes than most races since its inception in 1881. 

It has had 11 name changes since that time and the more popular include the Honda Stakes, Nissan Stakes and more recently the Emirates Stakes and Cantala Stakes.

Despite being run under a different name, punters have always had a good association betting on the Cantala Stakes and the quality winners is a testament to that. 

As long as the winners are considered as “classy” punters will see the Cantala Stakes as a race to continue to bet on. 

An important scheduling move was made when moving the Cantala Stakes from the last day of the carnival to the first. This gives the winners more chances to win throughout the carnival if they decide the back up. 

However, the premier mile contest in Australia has since moved back to the final day of the Flemington Carnival with the Champions Mile name due to being part of Champions Day.
