Coolmore Stud Stakes History

Originally run for two-year-old juveniles, the Coolmore Stud Stakes became a three-year-old feature in 1969 when the great Vain was victorious at Flemington.

It was formerly held on Australian Cup day in March but the Victoria Racing Club decided to make the change the whole nature of the race. The 3YO version was moved to Derby Day during the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

The Coolmore Stud Stakes was given Group 1 status in 2006 when Gold Edition scored and since then it has become a must-win race for any early stud prospects.

Horses that won the Coolmore Stud Stakes and then went to stud include Zoustar and Sepoy, which were retired early in their careers.

The Coolmore Stud Stakes is run down the straight at Flemington, which doesn’t suit every runner but gives the crowd plenty of enjoyment at Flemington.

It is run at set weights and was originally named the Ascot Vale Stakes before Coolmore Stud took over sponsorship.

Coolmore Stud Stakes Field

The field for the Coolmore Stud Stakes will be confirmed in the days leading up to the race.

Coolmore Stud Stakes Form Guide

Held just for three-year-old thoroughbreds, the Coolmore Stud Stakes is one of the highlight races not just during the Melbourne Cup Carnival, but for the entire Australian racing season.

The $1 million feature has been won by some of Australia’s finest horses and it’s a great race for future stud prospects. Encosta de Lago, Sepoy and Zoustar have all won the Coolmore Stud Stakes, which is why it’s such a popular race for fans and punters.

It takes a quality horse to win the Coolmore Stud Stakes and punters should be looking for the three-year-old runners which could make it as an older horse.

With recent winners including Sunlight, Japonisme and European-performed Merchant Navy, it’s a race worth watching.

It is run on Derby Day and adds to what is the best betting day on the Australian racing calendar.
