VRC Oaks History
The VRC Oaks was first run in 1861 when Palestine was victorious. It has since been won by many of Australia’s brightest fillies and the likes of Jameka, Mosheen, Miss Finland and Samantha Miss have gone on to win Group 1 races later in their careers.
Run for $1 million, the VRC Oaks isn’t the most popular betting race during the Melbourne Cup Carnival, mostly because it falls on the Thursday meeting, which is Ladies Day.
The biggest attendance was in 2004 with 110,677 people on track but numbers have decreased since. That could be due to the lack of other big races on the Oaks card.
It was given Group 1 status in 1979 and the current sponsorship is provided by Kennedy, so the race is currently called the Kennedy Oaks.
VRC Oaks Field
The field for the VRC Oaks will be confirmed in the days leading up to the race.
We will update the field when it’s released by RISA during the Melbourne Cup Carnival.
VRC Oaks Form Guide
The VRC Oaks has long been a tough race for punters to work. There is often a short-priced filly which has been winning the lead-up races, but none of those came over 2500m and that’s the big factor when winning the Oaks.
Many high-class middle-distance fillies have come unstuck in the VRC Oaks and there have been some big upsets. Lasqueti Spirit won in 2016 at huge odds when beating short-priced favourite Yankee Rose.
The Oaks is suited towards the tough fillies as opposed to the brilliant fillies. Look for the horses which will be able to grind away over the 2500m. That’s a big key to successful betting in the Oaks and recent winners will attest to that theory.
Some of the better winners to come out of the race include Miss Finland, Samantha Miss, Research and Light Fingers.
VRC Oaks Live Streaming
Punters can watch the VRC Oaks at Dabble, which has two channels to live stream every race in Australia and the feature races in New Zealand.
