    Manikato Stakes History

First ran in 1968 as the Freeway Stakes, the Manikato Stakes is one of Melbourne's favourite sprint races.

The name of the event was changed in 1984 to honour the great Manikato, who won this race twice en route to an Australian racing hall of fame induction back in 2002.

The race is a stand alone sprint feature, but in 2012 the Manikato Stakes was moved to a Friday night fixture before the Cox Plate; which is run less than 24 hours later.

A number of Australia's favourite horses have delivered wins in the Manikato, including Sunline, Miss Andretti and the great grey Chautauqua.
