Victoria Derby History
One of the oldest races in Australia, the VRC Derby was first run in 1855 when won by Rose Of May. Since that time, some of Australia’s biggest names have won the VRC Derby.
Phar Lap was a winner in 1929, Dulcify in 1978 and Red Anchor in 1984. Those are just some of the names glittered on the Derby trophy and although the recent winners aren’t as popular as the sprinters of Melbourne Cup winners, they are champion age-group runners in their own right.
Worth $2 million, the VRC Derby is the feature race on the first day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival, which runs for four days in a one-week span.
The first three editions were won by fillies but the last filly to win came in 1923 when Frances Tressady was victorious.
Three maiden runners have scored wins, with Preferment the most recent in 2014. It would later go on to win at Group 1 level again.
Victoria Derby Field
The field for the VRC Derby will be confirmed in the days leading up to the race.
We will update the field when it’s released by RISA during the Melbourne Cup Carnival.
Victoria Derby Form Guide
The VRC Derby is a race which trainers target from the very first race their runner has. It’s one of the time-honoured features on the Australian racing card and it regularity produces the best staying three-year-old thoroughbreds.
It can be hard for punters to weigh up the form for the Derby, as no runner has run over 2500m in the lead-up races, but finding the champion staying types is achievable. They don’t always have a massive turn-of-foot, but they all possess stamina.
Although the three-year-old winners haven’t always matured into much, they are champion age-group runners and they often have good stud credentials.
Punters should follow the lead-up races and look for the runners making ground in behind over 2000m.
