All-in odds for the Karaka Million 2YO are released around a month in advance but the final field is confirmed a few days before the race.

The Karaka Million 2YO is open to any horse purchased through the Karaka Thoroughbred Sales and it's only growing in popularity.

A program change has also made a positive impact on the Ellerslie feature meeting. The City of Auckland Cup, Concorde Handicap and Westbury have been confirmed for the six-race card, which totals NZ$2.44 million in stake money. 

Since its inception in 2008, the Karaka Million Raceday has featured some of the best talent from both sides of the Tasman, which included Melody Belle, Ruud Awakening and Australian winners Sister Havana and Hardline. 

Typically run as a Sunday twilight meeting, it was moved to a Saturday for the 2018 meeting in the hopes to attract a more international audience. 

Some of the past winners include Probabeel, Melody Belle and Vespa.

The field consists of 14 runners which have earned their spot in the field via prize money totals. There are no qualifying races in the lead-up and it's up to connections as to how they target their plan of attack. 

With numerous two-year-old races in the months prior to the race, getting enough stake money to make the final field is easily achievable if they're good enough.

Having been run for only 12 years, the Karaka Million form is still tough to work out, but it’s a race for favourite punters. The likes of Probabeel, Avantage and Melody Belle were all well-backed with bookmakers. 

There have been some upsets and that’s common with two-year-old racing. Punters should look at form from Ellerslie as not having experience at the Auckland-based track is a negative. 

The Karaka Million is a part of a twilight meeting held at Ellerslie in January. The twilight meetings have been very popular in New Zealand and it’s a format which works for the club.

A short six-race program keeps the betting public on course for the entire meeting. The 2YO was run as the final race in 2018 but we changed to Race 4 in 2019.
