Thousand Guineas Form Guide
Betting on the Thousand Guineas can be tricky as many of the entrants have been racing in mixed grade against the Caulfield Guineas contenders.
Some fillies excel against their own sex, including 2018 winner Amphitrite and 2017 winner Aloisia, which was never able to impress when running out of three-year-old grade.
Not many Thousand Guineas winners go on to competed at a high level as older mares, so punters should look for the fillies that are already racing in top form. Find runners that have won at least two races prior to the Guineas.
Favourite have a good record in the race but outsiders can bob up and surprise every now and then. In 2024, $31 chance Another Prophet claimed victory, while in 2021, it was $28 chance Yearning that took the race out.

Thousand Guineas History
A relatively new race to the Australian racing calendar, the Thousand Guineas was first run in 1946 when taken out by Sweet Chime.
Since that time, it has been won by the likes of Wenona Girl, Alinghi, Miss Finland and Atlantic Jewel, just to name a few.
Becoming a Group 1 in 1979, the Thousand Guineas was run on the second day of the Melbourne Spring Carnival from 1988-2013 but was changed to the first day in 2014. Prior to that, it was scheduled to run on Caulfield Cup day.
It’s one of the lowest staked Group 1 races in Australia at only $500,000. That’s reflective of the attention it garners from punters, but it can be a good money-making race.
Classy fillies have won in recent times and many punters have cashed in. Miss Finland, Atlantic Jewel and Guelph were all top punter elects to score the Thousand Guineas.
