New Zealand 2000 Guineas History
The NZ 2000 Guineas was inaugurated in 1973 when the New Zealand Oaks and Derby were moved from Riccarton. In return, the 1000 and 2000 Guineas races were added to the New Zealand Cup Week program.
A race for three-year-old colts, gelding and fillies, the NZ 2000 Guineas sees a wide-open field where the set weights gives the fillies a 2kg weight allowance.
It runs for $500,000, which is $200,000 more than the 1000 Guineas and the winners have gone on to successful careers over a wide range of distances.
Turn Me Loose, Atlante, Sacred Falls and Jimmy Choux all went on to win big races in Australia – Sacred Falls won consecutive Doncaster Handicaps. It has always been a good race to follow the form out of and punters always target this race.
New Zealand 2000 Guineas Field
The NZ 2000 Guineas field contains the best middle-distance colts, geldings and fillies in New Zealand.
We will have the confirmed field for the NZ 2000 Guineas when it’s released by NZTR.
New Zealand 2000 Guineas Form Guide
The NZ 2000 Guineas is targeted by New Zealand’s best three-year-old thoroughbreds and it has become a stallion-making race in recent history.
Punters should look for the colts which could have a stud career in mind, as the likes of Sacred Falls, Jimmy Choux and Darci Brahma have won in the last 20 years.
Those are some good names on and off the track, so looking for the quality colts is important for punters. Also, look for the fillies which have performed well throughout the year. Katie Lee scored the Guineas’ double in 2009 and she likely won’t be the last to do it.
