2024 Champions Mile Preview
This is a hot field and three of the 13 runners drop from the 2040m of the Cox Plate. They are Broadsiding, who was 3rd at the Valley, as well as Mr Brightside (4th) and Pride Of Jenni (8th).
All were well beaten by Via Sistina, but the weight-for-age championship rated through the roof with the winner going more than 23 lengths faster than standard benchmark. Broadsiding went 17.5 lengths faster, which is the best last start figure of any runner in this race.
Antino put a massive gap on his rivals to claim the Toorak Handicap (1600m) at his most recent start, going 15.5 lengths faster than standard benchmark. He comes in with four weeks in between runs and placed 3rd behind Pride Of Jenni and Mr Brightside before his Toorak triumph.
Three runners had their most recent start in the King Charles III Stakes (1600m) at Randwick, including My Oberon (3rd), Fangirl (6th) and New Energy (8th). Form ties into Pride Of Jenni, who was runner-up in that race, going 12.4 lengths faster than standard.
There are three horses on the one-week back up for this, including the luckless galloper, Stefi Magnetica, who was 5th in the Golden Eagle, going 9.8 lengths faster than standard.
Another Wil rebounded from his fadeout in the Toorak behind Antino to take out the Damien Oliver (1400m) at Flemington last weekend, while Amelia’s Jewel narrowly went down behind Atishu in the Empire Rose Stakes (1600m), going 9.1 lengths faster than standard.
We can expect a truly run race with Pride Of Jenni likely to go forward, while Another Wil and Desert Lightning wont be far away. Broadsiding, Antino, Fangirl and Stefi Magnetica are among the likely backmarkers.
2024 Champions Mile Tips
2024 Champions Mile Best Bet
Tough race and wide open. A number of gallopers have had four or more runs this time in with a few Grand Finals in the mix. Broadsiding remains on the fresh side, relatively, with his Cox Plate run the third of his current preparation. The Godolphin galloper has had four starts over the 1600m, winning three, including two at Group 1 level, while his only miss was in the Caulfield Guineas when it was tough to make ground that day. Have to trust the Cox Plate form and the weight-for-age championship has always been a solid form reference for this race. The stable have won this in the past with a horse called Best Of Days when the race was known as the Cantala Stakes. He was dropping from the 2000m. Michael Dee rides and will get back from the barrier but the pace should be genuine and Flemington will suit the three-year-old.
2024 Champions Mile Value Bet
Another Wil was disappointing in the Toorak but worked very hard in the early stages that day and I am prepared to forgive him for the performance behind Antino. He showed what he is capable of at Flemington last weekend when ridden quieter, overcoming traffic on the inside between the 400m and 200m before exploding late to defeat Jimmystar. Some query as to whether or not he can produce in a strongly run 1600m race but he can tuck away nicely from barrier 2 with cover and if the gaps come at the right time, he does have the sprint that can deliver at the business end. The Ciaron Maher-trained galloper has firmed since the barrier draw and is definitely one to throw into multiples and exotics.
