It’s the grand finale for the elite milers, and this year’s Champions Mile (1600m) at Flemington promises to be one of the most fascinating races of the carnival.

A clash of pure speed, bravery, and tactics, it features some of Australia’s most popular horses — headlined by Pride Of Jenni, the bold front-running mare who lit up Flemington on Derby Day, and Mr Brightside, the proven heavyweight seeking back-to-back wins in this race.

Add in the Sydney form through Ceolwulf, who conquered both of them in the King Charles III Stakes (1600m), and this becomes a tactical masterclass waiting to unfold. The question that defines the race?

Whether the field will let Pride Of Jenni do what she does best — break their hearts with her brutal early tempo — or whether the chasers can turn the tables late.

Pride Of Jenni has been the headline act all spring, alternating between breathtaking victories and brave defeats depending on how much pressure she faces in front. Last week in the Empire Rose, she went 12.5 lengths faster than standard to the 600m before still kicking clear to win by more than four lengths, reaffirming her freakish aerobic capacity.

Her King Charles III run, just three weeks ago, saw her slightly temper the speed (9.2L faster to the 600m), which allowed the field to stay within striking distance — and Ceolwulf capitalised to win, with Mr Brightside a gallant runner-up.

Leica Lucy returns off that Empire Rose runner-up, while Treasurethe Moment backs up from a Cox Plate (2040m) placing and remains unbeaten at Flemington, having once gone +16 lengths above standard to win the Kewney over this trip.

It’s a field packed with top-level milers in form, and with so many different formlines converging, race tempo will be everything.

2025 Champions Mile Speed Map

Expect Pride Of Jenni to spear to the front and try to open a break by the 1000m. Mr Brightside, Pericles and Treasurethe Moment are amont those likely to lead the peloton and ready to launch from the 400m, should Pride Of Jenni falter. Ceolwulf probably settles worse than midfield and conserving for one run, while Lake Forest, Steparty and Von Hauke are other closers. If they give Jenni five or more lengths turning, she’s hard to catch; if they press earlier or there’s a headwind in the straight, the stalkers—especially Mr Brightside/Ceolwulf—come right into it.

2025 Champions Mile Best Bet

Sticking with the mare at the trip and track, aiming to repeat her antics from 2023. The figures say she’s airborne and she has done it before on the one-week back-up. With a genuine WFA platform, a proven seven-day back-up and a field that lacks multiple aggressive leaders, she’s the one they must beat.

2025 Champions Mile Value Bet

The market’s tight at the top, so I’m hunting for a price to fill out multiples and Steparty fits. He was good last week conceding weight at G2 level, closing for fourth while posting the fastest 600–400 and 400–200 splits and rating +10.5. His last Flemington mile run—the Blamey—was a brave on-speed 4th despite pulling up lame and still returned +14 on the clock. A fast, sustained tempo here gives him a cart into the race without having to burn early; if he lands midfield with cover and sees daylight at the 300m, he can snag a podium and spice up exotics.
