The Winterbottom Stakes is a Group 1 race run over 1200m at Ascot racecourse in Perth held under weight-for-age conditions.
First run in 1952 it has attracted many great fields and been won by some great horses including Placid Ark (1987), Miss Andretti (2005) and Takeover Target (2008).
Another fantastic field has been assembled in 2024 and we have gone through every runner below and offered our top four selections.
1. Overpass (16)
Is just shy of $9 million in prize money mainly due to his back to back wins in The Quokka and is undefeated in three starts at Ascot racecourse.
Has proven an excellent fresh horse and has finished in the top two in seven of his eight first up runs including a win in the Sydney Stakes this campaign but failed to feature in the placings down the straight at Flemington last start.
2. Western Empire (4)
The Williams and Pike team come together with this seven-year-old gelding who was beaten by less than a length first up at Group 3 level.
The 2021 Group 1 Railway Stakes winner but he has failed to win in five other attempts at the top level and looks under the odds at his current price.
3. Red Can Man (11)
Eight-year-old gelding who has won four black type races during his career but has failed to find that form in quite some time.
Has had 11 starts at Group 1 or 2 level without winning and is one of the biggest outsiders in the race for a reason.
4. Hot Zed (2)
Similar to the horse above, Hot Zed has not found his best form for a long time but has a good winning record of 11 wins from 44 career starts.
Finished over six lengths from the winner first up in Group 3 grade and would need to improve significantly to be any chance.
5. Maharba (6)
Graham Begg has sent his talented mare west in search of her first Group 1 win and she comes into the race off the back of a Group 3 win down the Flemington straight.
She has been a model of consistency throughout her career, placing in nine of 13 overall and has drawn to get a lovely run in transit from barrier six.
6. Saloon Bar (13)
Won a listed race at Belmont earlier this campaign and has been placed at his next three race starts.
Loves this track and distance where he has finished in the top two in five of eight attempts and is one worth keeping safe at a big price.
7. Man Crush (7)
Was beaten less than a length in a listed race at Belmont back in August and then came out and won a benchmark 84 at his next start.
That form isn’t good enough to be winning a Group 1 race and happy to take him on.
8. Snowdome (10)
A two-time Group 3 winner including the Prince Of Wales Stakes over 1000m here at Ascot last year.
Finished seven lengths off the winner in last year’s Winterbottom and isn’t going as well 12 months later.
9. Rope Them In (9)
Has a fantastic winning record of seven wins from 15 career starts proving he is a progressive type of horse.
Comes into the race off the best win of his career at Group 3 level and although he’ll need to improve again, he’s not without a chance.
10. Boots Like Bruce (14)
Closed out last campaign with back to back wins at Belmont in black type races over 1200m.
Has been in good positions in both starts so far this campaign but failed to fire when asked for an effort in the straight.
Might be outclassed a little at this level.
11. Bravo Centurion (15)
There may not be a more exciting prospect in Western Australia at the moment which is evident in the fact that this four-year-old gelding has won all six of his start this campaign to earn a shot at Group 1 glory.
He started a short price in the Group 3 Prince Of Wales Stakes and saluted by over three lengths and he’s had a lovely trial win in between runs.
12. Rockin’ Rupert (3)
Worked through the grades well during his last campaign including winning his last two at Belmont.
Made up ground late when resuming and he’s drawn to get a soft run throughout from barrier three.
13. Almighty Class (5)
Another progressive local horse who has won back to back races here at Ascot to start this campaign.
Found the line well at Group 3 level last start but would need to improve to measure up to this level.
14. Crippalenko (8)
Kick started this campaign with two nice wins albeit in a much easier grade of race.
Was placed behind Bravo Centurion two back and would need to find another level to be any chance.
15. Lady Laguna (1)
One of only two mares in the race this year but brings some good form from the east into the race.
She’s a Group 1 winner and gets the added benefit of James McDonald’s services which is only a positive.
16. Laced Up Heels (12)
Failed to place in all four runs so far this campaign despite a consistent overall record.
Barrier won’t help and she doesn’t look up to this level.
