Winterbottom Stakes Tips - Overpass can maintain perfect record at Ascot, while a picket fencer might be the danger

2024 Winterbottom Stakes Preview
Overpass is the favourite for the Winterbottom Stakes and will be out to continue his love affair with the Ascot 1200m, having won all three starts at the venue. They include this race last year, as well as the Quokka in 2023 and 2024.
The Bjorn Baker gelding comes into this third up and won this race at the same stage last year. He claimed the Everest consolation at Randwick when resuming in the Sydney Stakes (1200m)and has since placed 8th in the Champions Sprint (1200m) at Flemington. Lady Laguna was also in action at Flemington, coming 10th.
There is only one other runner that had their most recent start outside of Western Australia and that is Maharba, who claimed the Rising Fast Stakes (1200m) at Flemington ahead of Rey Magnerio. He comes in with the best last start benchmark figures of any runner, having gone 12.7 lenghts faster than standard. Overpass went 10.7 lengths faster in his race.
10 of the field of 16 had their most recent start in the Colonel Reeves Stakes (1100m), which was taken out by Rope Them In at Ascot on November 16. Western Empire charged home in that race with the fastest last 200m and was first up. He should trhive with the fast tempo ahead of him in this race, while the extra 100m will play into his hands. The winner went 9.4 lenghts faster than standard in that race.
Others to come out of the Colonel Reeves include Saloon Bar, who closed off well for 3rd. Rockin’ Rupert and Boots Like Bruce were unlucky, finishing 5th and 7th respectively.
Bravo Centurion creates a stack of interest and has won six on end. He romped home by four lengths ahead of Saloon Bar in the Prince Of Wales Stakes (1000m) at his most recent start and is a genuine chance but just needs to deliver over the 1200m from barrier 15.

Overpass will be very hard to beat and the only concern for his backers might be the pace in this race, which looks pretty solid with a number that like to go forward. He should still be able to cross from barrier 16 and is tough as nails. Given his record at Ascot in major races over the 1200m, I have marked him on top, while there is no concern with his performance at Flemington as he has won his past three starts in races around a bend.
2024 Winterbottom Stakes Value Bet
Bravo Centurion is worth an each-way play on the back of his stunning recent record. The 1200m is the only query as he has had no exposure at a difficult level out to the distance. Since winning over the 1200m at Pinjarra back in August, his wins have been over the 1000m. However, he was able to sustain a hot tempo in runs over the 1000m at Belmont and his performance when winning by four lengths at Group 3 level last time is an encouraging sign. He draws just inside Overpass, who might cart him into the race early on.
