2026 King Charles III Stakes Preview

The superstar mare, Autumn Glow, will be looking to add another Group 1 to her remarkable record in the $5 million King Charles III Stakes (1600m).

The Chris Waller-trained mare has won 13 of her 14 starts, including four Group 1 victories, and will start a dominant favourite against a small but select field featuring dual defending champion Ceolwulf.

Autumn Glow ($1.33) has been outstanding throughout her career and has returned in brilliant order this preparation, winning the Winx Stakes (1400m) first-up in record time before controlling proceedings in the 7 Stakes (1600m) last start.

Her versatility has become one of her greatest assets, with the daughter of The Autumn Sun equally comfortable settling off a strong tempo or racing prominently in slowly run contests. James McDonald retains the ride, and the champion jockey believes the mare is still improving despite her extraordinary achievements.

Ceolwulf ($3.10) shapes as the main danger as he attempts to become the first horse to win three consecutive editions of the King Charles III Stakes. The Joe Pride-trained gelding has won the race in both 2024 and 2025 and arrives following another strong performance in the Epsom Handicap (1600m), finishing runner-up to God's Window after carrying a significant weight. He has an excellent record on rain-affected ground, including two wins and a placing from four starts on heavy surfaces, and connections will welcome any further rainfall.

God's Window ($21) deserves respect following his Epsom victory, while Just Folk ($41) and Militarize ($41) round out the field. The scratching of Pride Of Jenni has taken away a major source of early pressure and significantly changed the complexion of the race, potentially allowing Autumn Glow to dictate terms much closer to the speed.

The race has a remarkable honour roll, with previous winners including Winx, Anamoe, Verry Elleegant, More Joyous and Lonhro. Originally known as the George Main Stakes, the race was renamed in 2023 and moved to Everest Day. Remarkably, 18 of the previous 19 winners under the George Main name had already tasted Group 1 success, highlighting the quality traditionally required to claim the prestigious mile.

Autumn Glow is undoubtedly the horse to beat, but Ceolwulf's outstanding record in the race and proven ability on wet ground ensure the defending champion remains a genuine threat.

The King Charles III Stakes is Race 9 on the programme at Randwick and comes after The Everest, which is Race 7.

2026 King Charles III Stakes Speed Map

The scratching of Pride Of Jenni has dramatically changed the expected tempo, with the field reduced to five runners and considerably less early pressure. Just Folk appears the most likely leader, while Autumn Glow should be able to settle prominently from barrier four without being forced to work hard.

Ceolwulf is expected to settle just behind the leading division from barrier one, with God's Window and Militarize likely to take up positions further back. The absence of a genuine tearaway leader increases the likelihood of a tactical contest, potentially developing into a sprint home.

That scenario appears particularly favourable for Autumn Glow, who has already demonstrated her ability to accelerate sharply from a prominent position. Ceolwulf will need to remain within striking distance approaching the home turn, particularly if James McDonald is allowed to control the race aboard the favourite.

2026 King Charles III Stakes Best Bet- Exacta: Autumn Glow (1st) / Ceolwulf (2nd)

Autumn Glow looks extremely difficult to beat, and keen to take the exacta with Ceolwulf filling second. The Chris Waller-trained mare has demonstrated an exceptional ability to adapt to different race shapes, and the withdrawal of Pride Of Jenni removes the prospect of a testing early tempo that could have brought the defending champion into calculations. She should enjoy an economical run close to the speed, with James McDonald able to control when she makes her move. Ceolwulf remains the obvious danger, particularly on rain-affected ground, and the return of blinkers could sharpen him up after a solid Epsom Handicap performance. With the pair appearing to have a clear class advantage over their remaining rivals, Autumn Glow to defeat Ceolwulf looks the most appealing way to approach the race.
