Blue Diamond Stakes Tips - Runner-by-Runner Guide for the Caulfield Group 1

- Other key contenders: Tempted, Autumn Mystery, Devil Night
The first Group 1 of the year is the Blue Diamond Stakes which is for two-year-olds run over 1200m at Caulfield racecourse.
First run in 1971 some excellent juveniles have won the race including Redoute’s Choice (1999), Alinghi (2004) and Sepoy (2011).
Always a tough race to assess, we have gone through every horse accepted below and offer our top four selections.
1. Field Of Play (5)
The Bussutin & Young team have the one runner in the race this year and it comes in the shape of this unbeaten son of Deep Field.
He dominated his rivals to score by over three lengths on debut at The Valley and backed that up with his second win over 1100m here at Caulfield at start two.
Drawn well and has plenty of improvement.
2. Tycoon Star (15)
Won the Maribyrnong Plate down the Flemington straight during the spring carnival, a notorious race for knocking the young horses about as it is very early on in the season.
Ran on okay first up in the Blue Diamond Prelude behind Field Of Play and should take plenty of benefit out of that run.
Barrier doesn’t help.
3. Extractor (8)
Has placed in both career starts in Sydney including a third in the Golden Gift in November and a third in the Lonhro Plate two weeks ago.
The step up to 1200m looks ideal and Ben Melham jumps aboard for the first time.
4. Tentyris (4)
Beaten over three lengths on debut at Sandown but won down the Flemington straight at his next start at Listed level.
Damien Lane takes over from Mark Zahra and will steer from barrier four which is an advantage.
5. Devil Night (2)
Colt by Extreme Choice who was excellent on debut in the Blue Diamond Prelude despite going down by half a length.
There’s no doubt he’ll be better after that experience and stepping out over another 100m and the Hawkes team will have him ready to fire.
6. Autumn Mystery (16)
Still a maiden after placing in his first two starts at Mornington and Flemington.
Was beaten four lengths in the Blue Diamond Prelude behind Field Of Play but made up considerable ground late in the concluding stages.
Will need luck from an awkward draw in barrier 16.
7. Olatunde (9)
Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman saddle up this son of Farnan for the third time.
Hasn’t looked likely in both career starts and would need to find another gear to be competitive.
8. The Playwright (3)
Gai Waterhouse is no stranger to producing quality juveniles and she has a talented filly on her hands once again in the shape of The Playwright.
She comes into this Group 1 event off the back of a win in the Group 3 Widden Stakes at Rosehill and Regan Bayliss should be able to land on the speed from barrier three.
9. Palm Angel (1)
Secured the second win of her three start career in the Group 2 Blue Diamond Prelude for the fillies two weeks ago.
She sat just behind the leaders on that day and peeled out to storm clear over the last 50m of the race.
10. Icarian Dream (7)
Won a Group 3 at Eagle Farm just before Christmas booking her spot in the Magic Millions Classic on the Gold Coast where she was well beaten by over six lengths.
This is a big ask to peak again in such a big event and there are others I’d prefer.
11. My Gladiola (11)
Couldn’t have been much more impressive when scoring by 1.5 lengths in the Blue Diamond Preview for the fillies but failed to win as favourite in the Prelude.
The grey filly failed to settle in the run during that event which took her sprint away in the final 50m but it was a game effort and I wouldn’t be surprised if she bounced back.
12. Miss Celine (10)
Won a Listed race on debut here at Caulfield back in October but has been well beaten in both starts this campaign.
13. Wiltshire Square (13)
Yet to miss a place from three career starts including thirds in both the Preview and Prelude for the fillies.
Clearly has some ability but can she turn the tables on the other two fillies that have already beaten her as well as the boys?
14. Cherish Me (6)
Daughter of Brazen Beau who was ultra impressive when scoring by two lengths at Geelong over 1100m.
She made up considerable ground on that occasion and there’s no reason she won’t improve again second up although this is a considerable step up in grade.
15. Tempted (12)
Won her maiden on debut at Warwick Farm in December before having a six week freshen up.
That break did her the world of good and was beaten by the smallest of margins in the Widden Stakes at Rosehill two weeks ago.
16. Eden Rose (14)
Yet to win from three trips to the races but hasn’t been beaten far in all three.
Big step up in class and a wide barrier has me avoiding.
