Oakleigh Plate Tips - Runner-by-Runner Guide for the Caulfield Group 1
- The 2025 Oakleigh Plate is a prestigious Group 1 horse racing event at Caulfield
- I Am Me is a key contender with strong performance history, especially on firm tracks
- Other notable selections include She's Bulletproof, Sghirrpa and Arabian Summer for each-way value
Sprinting handicaps are always a fantastic betting proposition and the 2025 Oakleigh Plate is no different.
Run over 1100m at Caulfield, the Group 1 race was first run in 1884 and has been won by some excellent sprinting horses including Wakeful (1901), Schillaci (1992) and Snitzel (2006).
We’ve gone through every runner in the race and our top four selections can be found below.
1. I Am Me (2)
Six year old mare who has managed 11 wins from 25 career race starts including five at black type level.
Unlike a few of these runners, she is a genuine short course sprinter who has won four times from six first up runs and never missed a place fresh.
10 of her 11 career wins have been on a good track and she likely gets it very firm on Saturday in Melbourne.
2. Estriella (9)
Another mare that is better suited over the shorter distance who was beaten less than a length when resuming in the Group 1 Moir Stakes first up over 1000m during the spring.
She’s a classy daughter of I Am Invincible but I’m not sure she is quite up to winning a Group 1 race carrying the second most weight.
3. Golden Boom (13)
Consistent Queensland sprinter who has missed a place only twice in 18 career starts.
He’s a four time winner at Listed level but has never competed above that grade which is a concern.
4. Ostraka (17)
Put together three wins in a row to start her spring campaign which included an impressive win in the Silver Eagle.
She won over 1100m at Rosehill first up last prep and while she has a heap of natural ability she has drawn a tricky gate.
5. Rey Magnerio (5)
Another really consistent performer who has placed in 15 of 18 career starts including eight wins.
Produced the best win of his career first up at Group 2 level when he showed great determination to get past the leader in the closing stages and he’ll have a fitness edge on those that come into this race first up.
6. Insurrection (12)
Did all but win first up in the Group 2 Rubiton at this track and distance and if you believe Rey Magnerio is a chance in the race then this guy meets him better at the weights.
Loves a rock hard track and represents good value at his current price.
7. Jimmystar (14)
A progressive and lightly raced five-year-old gelding who won a benchmark 100 at this track and distance first up last campaign.
Ran second to Another Wil at Group 2 level and then was well beaten in the Sir Rupert Clarke to close out his spring.
Is capable but prefer others.
8. Brudenell (16)
Just one of his eight career wins has been in black type company but six of his nine wins have been on a firm deck.
Gets in with a very light weight but the barrier means he will need a heap of luck in running.
9. Hard To Say (7)
Little to suggest this horse is up to being competitive in a Group 1 race.
Even with just 52.5kg.
10. Sghirripa (3)
Is unplaced in three attempts at Group 1 level but was beaten just over two lengths in this race first up last year and made up plenty of ground late in the Newmarket a run later carrying this same weight.
Has drawn perfectly and won a trial by five lengths leading into this.
11. Ashford Street (4)
Secured the second Listed win of his career at this track (Heath) and distance after an eight week break between runs.
Drops 6kg from that event into this but he’s outclassed in a field of this quality.
12. Headwall (6)
Closed out his spring with back to back wins at Randwick and then won The Warra at Kembla Grange.
This is a whole other kettle of fish but carries no weight!
13. Prairie Flower (1)
I’m not sure that Group 2 Rubiton Stakes is the right form reference for this race but this mare was excellent late in that event and drops 4kg into this.
She won back to back races in South Australia prior to that and the stable has decided to have a throw at the stumps. Why not!
14. Sans Doute (10)
Placed in 14 of her first 16 starts but failed to do so in her last four races during her last campaign when stepping up to Group company.
Does her best racing on a firm track but not up to this grade.
15. She’s Bulletproof (8)
Couldn’t have been any more impressive when blitzing her rivals to win the Group 3 Bellmaine at Sandown where she was eased up on the line.
The is a progressive mare who has missed a place only once in her career and she drops 4kg on that last start win.
16. Arabian Summer (15)
Secured the fifth win of her short nine start career at this track and distance last start where she sustained a long run in the straight.
She would need to go to another level but she has just 50kg on her back and represents good each way value.
17. Espionage (11)
The lone three-year-old in the field having just the fifth start of his racing life.
Last time we saw this son of Zoustar he was winning the Group 3 Kindergarten Stakes by three lengths in April 2024 and with 50kg it would take a brave person to suggest he couldn’t run a big race.
