Futurity Stakes Tips - Runner-by-Runner Guide for the Caulfield Group 1
- Futurity Stakes at Caulfield is a key Group 1 race over 1400m
- Mr Brightside, a strong runner, seeks victory after C.F Orr Stakes
- Top contenders include I Wish I Win, Pericles and Private Life
A starting point for many quality horses during the autumn, the Futurity Stakes is run over 1400m at Caulfield racecourse under weight-for-age conditions.
The Group 1 event was first run in 1898 and has been won by some of our best race horses including Phar Lap (1931), Todman (1960) and Gunsynd (1972).
Another top field has been assembled this year and our thoughts can be found below.
1. Mr Brightside (11)
The champ has finished in the top two in five of his seven starts over 1400m at Caulfield including a narrow second when resuming a fortnight ago in the C.F Orr Stakes.
He looked the winner at the 100m before being run over late by Another Wil but he’ll take plenty of benefit out of that run and take beating again.
2. I Wish I Win (3)
The son of Savabeel has won over $12 million in prize money and has managed to place in 20 of his 24 career race starts.
Peter Moody and Catherine Coleman started his campaign at this track and distance in the Memsie Stakes during the spring where he finished half a length back from Mr Brightside so I see no reason why he won’t go close.
3. Pericles (1)
Won twice during his spring campaign culminating with a victory in the Five Diamonds at Rosehill.
Two of his six career wins have been first up and 1400m looks ideal.
4. Tom Kitten (2)
His best is very good but it is his inconsistency that frustrates punters.
There is evidence to suggest he does his best racing when fresh and while I believe he can run a race, this level may be beyond him.
5. Light Infantry Man (5)
A win in the Group 1 Northerly Stakes to close out his last campaign clearly has the stable shooting higher this autumn with their grey gelding.
He’s another that is capable of producing a rating high enough to be competitive at this level but working out when that is may prove difficult.
6. Pinstriped (6)
Won the Group 1 Memsie Stakes at this track and distance during the spring off the back of a second placing first up.
His first up performance in the C.F Orr Stakes two weeks ago was well below par and I couldn’t possibly back him off of that.
7. Freedom Rally (4)
Was narrowly denied in the Five Diamonds behind Pericles in November and Tony Gollan has sent him south again chasing a Group 1.
Was beaten over seven lengths in the C.F Orr Stakes two weeks ago and would need to improve dramatically.
8. Super Smink (7)
Was third in the Group 1 Railway Stakes over the Perth carnival but battled two weeks ago behind Another Wil.
Will find this very tough again.
9. Place Du Carrousel (9)
Finished second to Via Sistina when making her Australian racing debut in the Ranvet Stakes this time last year.
Has failed to place in three runs since and will be better when she gets out over some distance.
10. Private Life (10)
The 2024 Caulfield Guineas winner took on the older horses two weeks ago when resuming and finished over five lengths behind Another Wil.
The leaders were off and gone before he got a chance to chase but I thought he found the line quite well late.
Can improve.
11. Evaporate (8)
Finished within a length of Private Life in the Caulfield Guineas during the spring and was excellent first up against his own age in the Autumn Stakes when placing.
This is another kettle of fish but it’s not the strongest open Group 1 race I’ve seen so worth a throw at the stumps.

2nd: No. 2 I Wish I Win
3rd: No. 10 Private Life
4th: No. 3 Pericles
