Thousand Guineas Tips - Runner-by-Runner Guide for the Caulfield Group 1
- Runner-by-Runner Guide to the Thousand Guineas
- Who will take out the Caulfield Group 1?
- Skybird tops our selections
The Group 1 Thousand Guineas takes place at Caulfield racecourse for three-year-old fillies over 1600m run under set weights.
For the first time in the history, the race will be run after the Melbourne Cup Carnival.
First run in in 1946, the race has been won by some champion fillies including Wenona Girl (1960), Alinghi (2004) and Miss Finland (2006).
Who will win the race this year? We have gone through every runner below and picked out our best selections with odds from QuestBet.
1. Kimochi (4)
The Gary Portelli-trained daughter of Brave Smash has competed in black type races for the majority of her short career and is yet to miss a place.
She was beaten less than a length behind Tropical Squall in the Group 1 Flight Stakes over 1600m at Randwick two back proving her ability at this level.
Dropping back in distance to 1400m, she again placed at Listed level at Flemington last time out and she has drawn to get a nice run in transit from barrier four.
2. Coeur Volante (5)
Was a narrow winner at The Valley when resuming from a spell at Group 3 level and backed that up with a dominant win in the Thousand Guineas Prelude here at Caulfield.
That was the third win from four career race starts for the talented filly and the step up to 1600m now looks ideal.
One of the leading contenders.
3. Skybird (2)
Continues to step up in grade every time she is asked and comes into this Group 1 event undefeated from three career starts.
All of those wins have been during this debut prep and she made plenty of ground late in between runners to win the Group 2 Fillies Classic at The Valley last start.
She’ll take improvement out of that run and should be ready to peak at this stage in her prep.
4. Arctic Glamour (7)
Won her first two starts this prep by a combined 5.6 lengths the second of which was at Listed level.
Was sent out a short-priced favourite at Group 2 level last start but was well beaten.
Many thought she may have come to the end of the prep but she lines up again here. Watch betting.
5. Carina Queen (8)
Secured the second win of her short career at Sandown over 1400m two back which earned her a shot at a higher grade at The Valley last time out.
She had a fair bit of work to do when straightening but find the line well, finishing less than a length behind Skybird.
If that is the right form line, expect her to be very prominent at the end of the 1600m.
6. Joliestar (1)
The Chris Waller-trained filly has been bridesmaid in all three of her runs this prep proving she is a consistent performer.
Made up plenty of ground late down at Flemington on Melbourne Cup day and not concerned about the step up to 1600m now.
James McDonald jumps back aboard which is a positive.
7. Zourion (11)
Came over from New Zealand having won her first two starts during her first prep including a Group 2 on a heavy 10.
Has been beaten in both starts in Australia although she did manage a placing here at Caulfield. Any rain would be a bonus.
8. Vivy Air (13)
Won by the barest of margins at Seymour in a benchmark 64 when resuming earning her a shot at a tough grade of race.
She was near last on the turn in the Thousand Guineas Prelude but made up considerable ground late to finish within 1.25 lengths of Coeur Volante on the line.
Declan Bates jumps back on having piloted her at Seymour and she is one that represents good value at her current price.
9. Apache Song (9)
Dominated her rivals at Moe first up, recording a 6.5 length win to break her maiden duck.
Has been well beaten in her last two and has not shown any indication she is up to Group 1 level.
10. Enna’s Dream (6)
Put together two wins on the trot at Bairnsdale and Sandown and was only narrowly denied behind Carina Queen last start.
Is that form good enough to be winning this? I wouldn’t have thought so.
11. Ersa (12)
Was sent out as the $1.35 favourite at Ballarat three back and saluted for the punters by a whopping nine lengths.
Has been solid in her last couple and was only two lengths off the winner in the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes at Flemington leading into this assignment.
The winkers go on for the first time and she is one that looks to have improvement in her.
12. Vibrant Sun (10)
Couldn’t have been any more impressive when scoring at Geelong last start by eight lengths and that was over 1715m.
We know she runs the distance, and should be plenty fit, but unsure she is up to this grade at this stage of her racing career.
13. Quickster (3)
Narrowly beaten on debut at Pakenham and was run over late in the piece in the Fillies Classic at The Valley.
She proved she can be competitive against the better fillies in that event but at just her third career starts, this might be a bit much for her.
