2020 Tarzino Trophy Preview, Predictions & Betting Tips
|Date||Saturday August 31, 2020|
The Tarzino Trophy kicks off on August 31 and it’s the first of three Hawke’s Bay Triple Crown races in New Zealand.
Worth $200,000 and standing at Group 1 level, the Tarzino Trophy has been won by New Zealand’s best thoroughbreds, including the likes of Sunline and Rough Habit.
Which quality runner which get their season off to the best start in the Tarzino Trophy? We have our best bets and value runners on offer.
2020 Tarzino Trophy Best Bet – Melody Belle @ 5.00
Melody Belle is looking to go back-to-back in the Tarzino Trophy after scoring a win in 2018. The Te Akau-raced mare is a winner of 10 from 19 starts and is New Zealand’s best thoroughbred.
She comes into this having won her last three starts at Group 1 level when taking out the BCD Sprint, Haunui Classic and Bonecrusher Stakes.
All three wins were of the highest quality and she’s the best runner in this race.
The Jamie Richards-trained runner also has experience winning the J.J. Atkins in Australia and that’s form that most Tarzino Trophy runners don’t have.
She’s the favourite for a reasona and it’s going to take a good horse to beat her.
2020 Tarzino Trophy Best Each Way – Helena Baby @ 8.50
Helena Baby will inevitably head offshore but connections could search for a Group 1 win before they head to Hong Kong.
The John Bell-trained gelding has a record of five wins from seven starts and he looked better than average when winning the Opunake Cup by almost six lengths on July 20.
Those kinds of performances are good enough to win at Group 1 level in New Zealand although this is a massive rise in class, he looks a nice type for the future.
Unfortunately, Kiwi punters won’t get to see him in action for much longer but they’d love to see him leave as the Tarzino Trophy champion.
The odds of 11.00 are appealing and they’ll likely drop.
2020 Tarzino Trophy Best Roughie – Endless Drama @ 15.00
Note: Endless Drama was tipped at 15.00 in futures markets. Endless Drama is now paying 2.70.
Former Australian runner Endless Drama is more than capable of winning in New Zealand, as shown when winning the Group 2 Easter Handicap at Ellerslie in April.
His form since has included a sixth in the Kingsford-Smith Cup and a third placing in the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap at Eagle Farm.
Australian Group 1 form is going to stack up nicely and his form has improved nicely since transferring from the Chris Waller stable to the Tony Pike stable.
Punters are taking a risk with Endless Drama but the 15.00 on offer makes it worth the risk.
Melody Belle is a class act and should prove tough to beat after running well last start.
There was nothing wrong with the run of Helena Baby last start and Endless Drama has been the real firmer after his last start victory.
