Sydney Cup Racing Tips - Waller & McDonald have a strong hand, lightweights in the mix

2026 Sydney Cup Preview
River Of Stars is set go a couple of spots better in the 2026 edition of the Sydney Cup after finishing 3rd in the staying feature in 2025.
The Chris Waller-trained galloper is headed in the market by Mr Monaco at $6 and Campaldino ($7.50). She sits at River Of Stars $8.50 with Newlook and Soul Of Spain also prominent in a deep staying edition.
However, the Chairman’s Quality (2600m) remains the dominant lead-up into this race over the journey and this year it again shapes as a strong form line, with five runners emerging from that event.
Newlook took it out in a run that rated 9.6 lengths faster than standard benchmark, dropping 2kg here to 51kg. Campaldino was runner-up, Juja Kibo filled 3rd, Athabascan 5th and Changingoftheguard was never suited after being forced to work.
The Tancred Stakes (2400m) is the other major line to respect. River Of Stars was excellent in 4th there behind the A-graders in Aeliana and Dubai Honour, going 10 lengths faster than standard benchmark, while Piggyback was brave in 5th under weight-for-age conditions and now gets back to a Handicap. Soul Of Spain and Valiant King also come through that race.
River Of Stars brings the strongest established Sydney Cup profile. She was third in this race last year, running 20.4 lengths faster than standard benchmark, a figure superior to anything any runner in this field has produced. Her Melbourne Cup 4th last spring only strengthens the profile.
Mr Monaco is one of the most interesting runners after his Manion Cup win, where he sat wide without cover and still dug deep in a performance that rated 9.5 lengths faster than standard benchmark. The Maher-trained stayer is still on the rise and commands major respect.
Historically, 15 of the last 31 winners came through the Chairman’s, and the Chairman’s → Sydney Cup double has landed nine times, keeping that form line front and centre.
2026 Sydney Cup Speed Map
The 3200m start at Randwick again reduces the usual barrier concerns, especially for the wide-drawn stayers.
Newlook should get the perfect economical run from gate 1, while River Of Stars maps to land in the ideal trailing midfield role from barrier 6.
Campaldino has enough tactical speed to offset gate 14 and settle on pace or just off it, while Mr Monaco is likely forced to roll forward from 16 and absorb the extra work early.
Changingoftheguard can also press on from barrier 3 and looks one of the runners likely to ensure this becomes a genuinely run two miles.
Litzdeel lands beautifully in midfield from gate 7 and profiles as the ideal lightweight mare stalking the speed before launching late.
The key map takeaway is that wide gates are far less damaging here than over shorter staying trips, and the horses with proven stamina who settle cleanly should dominate the finish.
2026 Sydney Cup Best Bet
River Of Stars
River Of Stars is the horse with the clearest proven Sydney Cup profile.
Her 3rd in this race last year produced a figure no runner in this field has yet matched, and her Melbourne Cup 4th confirms she is a genuine elite-level two miler.
The dry track is a major positive, James McDonald goes aboard and the return to Handicap conditions after a strong Tancred run gives her every chance to peak.
This race has clearly been a long-range target and she looks ready to strike.
2026 Sydney Cup Value Bet
Litzdeel
Litzdeel looks the best value in the race.
The Victorian mare is still on the rise and her recent Roy Higgins runner-up over 2600m suggested she is building perfectly towards the two miles.
Her spring spike came fourth-up when rising from 2400m to a win over the 2800m on Melbourne Cup day, a profile that mirrors this campaign beautifully.
The lightweight 51kg is a huge advantage in a genuine staying handicap, and her recent figures suggest she is going just as well this time in.
This is tougher, but she profiles exactly like the type of mare that can run a massive Sydney Cup at a price.
