Northerly Stakes Tips – Western Empire to turn back the clock in the Northerly

The Railway Stakes is a key formline with nine runners coming through the 1600m Group 1, but the shift from Handicap to weight-for-age alters the landscape. 

Watch Me Rock and Western Empire cleared out from the field in that race, going six lengths faster than standard benchmark, but the winner now faces a 5kg weight rise and meets Western Empire 4kg worse off. 

Several Railway runners produced eye-catching late work, including Sentimental Hero with the second-fastest last 200m, and Depth Of Character, who clocked the fastest last 200m after being posted wide throughout. 

He draws dramatically better this time and shapes as one of the more interesting improvers. Osipenko had no luck at all in the Railway but must overcome another horror draw, while Watch Me Rock will attempt to back up his big win despite the harsher weight scale.

But it is King Of Light that is all the rage in the betting. He has built an unbeaten five-from-five record and comes off a dominant pair of victories, including the Fairetha Stakes, where he went eight lengths faster than standard, before hius last start win in the WA Guineas when stepping to the 1600m. 

The question is whether he can now extend his brilliance to 1800m at WFA against seasoned older horses. His relaxed style, massive stride, and weight advantage all point to him handling the rise in trip. 

Pure Excess, the other three-year-old, arrives off her Champion Fillies victory but must produce a substantial personal best to challenge at this level.

The eastern states contingent adds another layer entirely. Apulia brings some of the best numbers in the race and is already proven over longer trips, while Vivy Air also arrives in top form after winning the Five Diamonds (1800m) at Rosehill with a nine-length-above-benchmark figure, and the stable won this race last year. Depth Of Character, who has had one WA run, looks ready to elevate sharply from a much better draw.

There is no obvious leader, which is unusual for this race and creates significant tactical uncertainty. Watch Me Rock may roll forward and attempt to control the race from just off the fence, and Western Empire draws ideally to settle right behind him, either box-seating or enjoying a one-off trail. King Of Light maps perfectly from barrier eight, sliding into a midfield position with cover where he can blend in at the right time. Apulia is likely to settle midfield or a pair worse, conserving energy for one sustained run. Vivy Air maps similarly, while Depth Of Character receives an ideal smother from his inside draw, positioned to angle out when the pressure builds. Osipenko and Pure Excess drift back from wide barriers and will rely heavily on tempo.

The likely race shape is a controlled, even tempo, with the middle stages posing the greatest tactical challenge. If the field steadies mid-race, the advantage swings sharply to runners with acceleration and favourable draws. Western Empire, King Of Light, Apulia and Depth Of Character all fit that profile and look set to build momentum at the right time. The absence of a tearaway leader makes it difficult for the backmarkers, and this should be a race won between the 600m and the 200m by the horses who can quicken off a sliding tempo.

Western Empire finds the perfect set-up to claim another major. His Railway run was excellent, he enjoys a meaningful weight swing relative to Watch Me Rock, and he is unquestionably the most proven WFA horse in the field. The rise to 1800m suits him far better than many of his rivals, and he maps to enjoy one of the softest runs in the race. His figures this prep say he is right back to his best, and his ability to absorb tempo and accelerate off it gives him a decisive tactical edge. With the ideal draw, the right race shape and his established class at this level, he is the horse they must beat.

Apulia is the runner capable of blowing this race wide open. His ten-length-above-standard figure when resuming is good enough to win the Northerly, and his Chester Manifold victory confirmed he is building perfectly through the grades. Third-up, fitter, and rising to 1800m, he brings genuine eastern-states Group 1-level form that typically measures up extremely well in this race. He has tactical versatility, a powerful finishing burst, and the platform to elevate again. If Western Empire doesn’t put them away, Apulia is the horse most likely to arrive late and score at value.
