Kingston Town Classic Tips & Runner-By-Runner Preview
The Kingston Town Classic rounds out Group One action in Australia for 2021 and ends the majors in the west, before the stayers move on to the Perth Cup lead-up's ahead of the New Year's Day grand final.
This 1800m feature is worth $1 million and is now considered to be the premier event on the Western Australia racing calendar
Below, we analyze the chances of every runner for the 2021 Kingston Town Classic.
1. Regal Power (8)
His career looked in jeopardy after two failed Melbourne stints, but has bounced back this prep and was easily eye-catcher in the Lee Steere (fastest last 600m), when second-up, so is building perfectly towards a peak. The form out of the race is horrific, but he's a proven WFA galloper and the logical danger to the fav ($5.00 @ bookmaker).
2. Trap For Fools (7)
A WFA Group 1 winner in 2018, he's been a grand galloper over the journey, amassing more than $2.2 million in the process. Has had two searching trials in the lead-up and his last few preps have been consistent. More than double the price ($81.00 @ bookmaker) of his half-brother (Too Close The Sun) and is seemingly going better.
3. Neufbosc (1)
Arrived to last year's Kingston Town Classic off a win and was consistent either side of that near nine length defeat, while he's clearly not in that touch currently. Really plain in the RJ Peters off a gun run before being unsuited a leader dominated Carbine Club. Around 70/1 currently, and should be starting triple figures.
4. Too Close The Sun (10)
Is a long way off the horse that finished second in the 2020 Railway Stakes before an honest fourth in this feature, and it gets no easier with Western Empire and Regal Power. Without an excuse in either performance, both recent spring efforts so far have been terrible. Couldn't possibly entertain off current form.
5. Platoon (5)
Set for a third Kingston Town tilt and was one of the better closers last year. Struggling this prep, albeit despite the margin, he at least found the line somewhat in the Railway, where he recorded the third-fastest last 600m. Outsider of the race ($151.00 @ bookmaker) that we'd have over two already mentioned, but that's not saying much.
6. Notorious One (6)
Produced the run of the race outside of the winner fresh and in the Railway, again recorded the best effort behind Western Empire. Clint Johnston Porter back aboard is a big plus for this quirky galloper, with these two having built a strong affiliation over the winter. Big chance of a top three finish ($19.00 @ bookmaker).
7. Western Empire (9)
Bolted in with the Railway, where he never looked in doubt and despite a trickier draw here in a smaller field, he has tactical versatility, so Pike can practically do what he likes. History hasn't been kind for Railway winners coming straight WFA, but his figures are already elite. What price does he start? ($1.40 @ bookmaker)
8. Dance Music (2)
Should take up the running, while she ticked the 1800m box at Ascot in January, leading all the way despite carrying topweight. Considering the on-speed nature of the Lee Steere, she was a little plain second-up and was ordinary in the Railway. Nice map, but hard to have off those last two efforts.
9. Kissonallforcheeks (4)
Interestingly, was a well-supported fav versus Western Empire two back, where she failed, but bounced back in the RJ Peters and was honest in the Railway, albeit she did no work in transit. The 1600m looked to see her out, so 1800m is the obvious query, although is clearly going better than most.
10. Searchin' Roc's (3)
With the featherweight of 50kg, the three-year-old fillies have had a good recent record in the Kingston Town, winning two of the last three editions and this girl profiles every bit as well Kay Cee did. The soft draw is a big tick and the 1800m shouldn't pose an issue off the last win. Has to be in the top three mix ($10.00 @ bookmaker).
Verdict
As the market suggests, Western Empire is the clearly the one to beat in the 2021 Kingston Town Classic, with Regal Power the main threat.
Notorious One is more that $3+ the place, which appeals as the value wager.
