The Golden Slipper is the richest race in the world for two-year-old thoroughbreds and is run over 1200m at Rosehill racecourse at set weights.

First run in 1957, the prestigious Group 1 race has been won by some exceptional juveniles including Vain (1969), Luskin Star (1977) and more recently Pierro (2012).

This year’s edition is one of the best in many years and we have gone through every single runner and assessed their chances below with best odds from BoomBet.

1. Storm Boy (2)

The number one seed and favourite for a reason having won all four of his starts so far including the rich Magic Millions Classic on the Gold Coast in dominant fashion.

He returned with a win at Group 2 level as the odds on favourite and was never really in danger, scoring by 1.5 lengths.

There has to be some questions of the quality of horses finishing behind him but it is the way in which he has won that makes him the horse to beat.

There is a far amount of speed drawn just to his outside which may make it hard for him the control the tempo in front like he is used to.

2. Fully Lit (1)

Started his racing career with two impressive victories, beating the smart Rue De Royale in the process.
Found one better in the Black Opal last start but the run was full of merit.

Would need to find another level to win this.

3. Shangri La Express (3)

Won his first two in the spring including the Golden Gift at this track and has placed in both starts this campaign.

Fought on well to be beaten less than a length behind Switzerland two back and was again placed behind that horse in the Todman which has always been a good guide for the Slipper.

Not without a chance considering the good draw in barrier three.

4. Rue De Royale (14)

Has failed to win in five career starts but has placed three times in quality races.

Was beaten three lengths in the Blue Diamond Stakes at Caulfield but may just be below the better two-year-olds at this stage of racing.

5. Traffic Warden (6)

Was beaten over two lengths behind Storm Boy when making his racing debut at Rosehill back in December and has placed in all but one of his five starts.

His short career has netted two wins including one at Group 2 level at headquarters leading into this assignment and he looks a progressive type.

Is the 1200m too sharp for him?

6. Straight Charge (9)

One of Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott’s seven runners in the race and probably their second seed behind the favourite.

The son of Written By has finished in the top two in all four career starts including runner up to Switzerland in the Todman Stakes.

Tim Clark is an excellent judge of pace up front and that’s where he will be trying to land from barrier nine.

7. Switzerland (7)

Is unbeaten in three starts this prep and is a colt with an excellent turn of foot when asked for an effort.

James McDonald is glowing in his praise of the colt’s professionalism as a race horse which is half the battle with these young horses and you know the champion hoop will have him in a good position, ready to strike at the right stage.

Looks to have untapped ability and is one of the leading contenders.

8. Bodyguard (10)

Was favourite for the Blue Diamond Stakes before being withdrawn from the race at a late stage.

His effort in the Todman Stakes behind Switzerland was much better than it looks on paper and once he was clear he savaged the line late.

There looks a strong pace on up front and I predict he sits just in behind and has a shot at them late.

9. Dublin Down (13)

Proved he is a colt with ability when winning the Group 3 Maribyrnong Plate down the Flemington straight during the spring carnival.

Was beaten 3.6 lengths behind Hayusagi in the Blue Diamond but returned to the winners circle with a win last weekend at this track and distance to make the field.

10. Coleman (4)

Won his first two starts by a combined 4+ lengths at Caulfield but was a beaten favourite in the Blue Diamond.

Had every chance last weekend but finished a good gap behind Dublin Down despite placing.

Looks a level below these.

11. Holmes A Court (8)

Was solid without winning at his first two starts but came out and won the Black Opal at Canberra leading into this.

I’m not sure that is the right form line to be following into this.

12. Prost (11)

Found the line really well on debut at Group 3 back in September placing behind Espionage and Straight Charge.

Kick started this campaign with a win and was only beaten by Storm Boy last time out.

Will need luck but speed will be on for him and watch for him late!

13. Hayasugi (16)

Has won all three starts this prep by a small margin including the Blue Diamond Stakes at Caulfield where she stormed over the top at the right time.

Has drawn horribly in barrier 16 which may force Jamie Kah’s hand a bit but it would take a brave person to think she can’t overcome it.

14. Lady Of Camelot (5)

Couldn’t have been any more impressive when winning by three lengths first up here at Rosehill.

She lost no admirers when leading all of the way in the Blue Diamond only to be run down in the final stages and it was a very brave performance from a filly out on her own.

Loved her trial win in between runs and Blake Shinn can get the filly straight to the front again from a perfect draw in barrier five.

15. Manaal (17)

This daughter of Tassort has a win over Lady Of Camelot in the Group 3 Gimcrack back in September where she showed a sharp turn of foot.

She was a dominant winner of the Group 2 Sweet Embrace where she beat home the smart Fly Fly who has subsequently come out and placed at Group 3 level.

She’s another that will benefit from a quick speed up front and despite the poor draw, she looks well over the odds.

16. Eneeza (15)

Was in the money in her first three starts including a win at Listed level by 2.3 lengths at Caulfield.

She had every chance in the Blue Diamond to finish just over a length off the winner and the Moody camp has decided she’s going well enough to have a shot in this race.
