The Galaxy is a Group 1 open handicap run over 1100m at Rosehill racecourse worth $1 million in prize money.
First run in 1972 it has been won by some very good sprinters including Luskin Star (1978), Schillaci (1992) and Nature Strip (2019).
We’ve gone through every runner in this year’s race and offered our thoughts and top four selections below and best odds from PuntNow.
1. Private Eye (14)
Blake Shinn and Joe Pride decided to take up the running when resuming down the Flemington straight which almost paid dividends when narrowly defeated by champion mare Imperatriz.
He then had a mountain of work to do in the Challenge Stakes which simply proved too much over the shorter distance.
Will be better out to 1100m and will be nearing peak fitness now.
2. King Of Sparta (11)
The Snowden team have placed this gelding really well in recent times and he has now surpassed $3 million in prize money.
His win on the Gold Coast was super impressive and he managed to win his first Group 2 at Randwick last time out.
Racing in career best form and the firm track that is predicted will suit.
3. Mazu (15)
Joined the Joe Pride team from the Snowden’s for this prep and had an enormous amount of support in betting first up in the Challenge Stakes where he was beaten 1.3 lengths.
It has been a long time in between wins for the now five-year-old gelding but he has been placed three times from five starts at Group 1 level.
4. Uncommon James (1)
What an incredibly consistent performer he has been, placing in all but one of his 13 career starts including all four at the highest level of racing.
The O’dea and Hoysted team have placed him really well throughout his career and this looks a really nice race for him again.
Loved his trial leading into this first up assignment.
5. Aft Cabin (8)
James Cummings has been patient with this son of Astern and at some point the penny will drop for him.
He’s won four of his 11 career starts, three of which have been in black type company and his first up run in the Challenge Stakes was excellent when he showed a sharp turn of foot late.
Will improve off that effort and he drops 3.5kgs.
6. Buenos Noches (4)
Is a horse that often threatens in big races without winning but the fact of the matter is that 11 of his 13 career starts have been in black type events.
Was beaten half a length in the VRC Classic to close out his spring campaign but failed to fire in the Newmarket last time out.
Is capable of producing a rating high enough to be competitive but you will need to take on trust.
7. Kallos (12)
Two time Group 2 winner including the Rubiton Stakes at Caulfield in February and then finished within 2.7 lengths of the winner at Group 1 level last time out.
He drops 3kg for that effort and has four wins from nine attempts at this distance.
$81 seems an incredibly big price for a horse that is as capable as this guy.
8. Remarque (6)
Seems a different horse since being gelded evident by his first black type win first up last campaign.
Joined the Ladbrokes Racing Club, which has had little success, for this prep and was beaten just over a length first up in the Challenge Stakes which looks a good guide for this event.
Drops 4kgs into this and two of his five career wins have been at this track and distance.
9. Asfoora (17)
Four of her eight wins have come at Group 2 and Group 3 level but she is yet to win from five goes at the highest grade of racing.
This is her ideal distance and I’d love to see Tim Clark take her straight to the front from the outside barrier.
10. Passive Aggressive (10)
A very progressive and lightly raced five-year-old mare who has now won six of her nine starts.
She proved her natural ability when winning impressively first up in the Challenge Stakes as well as her sharp turn of foot over the short course.
A genuine sprinting mare who gives her all.
11. Sunshine In Paris (2)
This Anabel Neasham trained four-year-old is an exciting prospect and she comes into this Group 1 event having won four of her six career race starts.
One of those wins came at the top level when winning the Group 1 Surround Stakes last autumn where she beat Ruthless Dame and In Secret.
Her only start in the spring netted her another black type win in the Group 2 Sheraco Stakes beating Espiona by a length and while this may be short of her ideal distance, she remains one of the leading contenders because of her enormous upside.
12. Zapateo (9)
A consistent mare who has placed in 16 of 24 overall and twice from three attempts at Group 1 level.
She led the field when resuming in the Challenge Stakes and fought on gamely to hold second, beaten under a length.
She’ll appreciate the step up in distance and 3.5kg drop in weight.
13. Ozzmosis (13)
The 2023 Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes winner returns to the track for the first time this autumn having won four of five so far in his short career.
The son of Zoustar was beaten by King’s Gambit fairly convincingly before that win down the Flemington straight but he has plenty of improvement to come.
Both trials leading into this first up assignment have been solid and he must be considered.
14. Front Page (16)
It had been a while in between wins for this now seven year old gelding before he took out The Kosciuszko during his spring campaign by 1.8 lengths.
Has had five goes at Group 1 level without placing but he does get in well at the weights here.
15. King’s Gambit (5) EM1
The Snowden team decided against going to the Coolmore Stud Stakes after an impressive win in the Roman Consul, his second of his career.
He was asked to carry just 50kg first up at Group 1 level against the older horses and while he was a beaten favourite, he was beaten just over two lengths.
Loved his trial win in between runs and with a light weight again, and a good draw, he represents good each way value at double figures should he gain a start.
