King Charles III Stakes Tips - Runner-by-Runner Guide for the Randwick Group 1
- The King Charles III Stakes is a prestigious 1600m race at Royal Randwick
- Top selections are Pride Of Jenni, expected to lead, Ceolwulf, Pericles and Fangirl
- Mixed performance backgrounds of runners promise a competitive race
Formerly known at the George Main Stakes, the King Charles III Stakes is run over 1600m at Royal Randwick racecourse under weight-for-age conditions.
First run in 1945, the Group 1 race has been won by some of our best horses including Kingston Town (1982), Lonhro (2003) and Winx (2016,17,18).
We’ve run through every runner in this year's edition and offer our thoughts and top four selections below.
1.Pericles (5)
Dropped back in grade at The Valley second up to secure a dominant win by 2.5 lengths and followed that up with a third behind Buckaroo in the Underwood Stakes at Caulfield.
Would have been much better suited in the Toorak last weekend instead of the Hill Stakes as he’s much better over the shorter distance which he gets here.
2.My Oberon (8)
Was beaten half a length behind Fangirl second up in the 7+ Stakes but the mare gave him windburn on the way past.
Forced to carry the top weight in the Epsom Handicap and was caught wide the entire trip from barrier 20 to be beaten just over three lengths.
Going well but may just be a length or two off the top ones.
3.Lion’s Roar (6)
The 2021 Randwick Guineas winner comes into this race in winning form after taking out the Wyong Cup last time out.
The now seven-year-old gelding has had five weeks in between runs and despite the good draw in barrier six, looks out of his depth.
4.Major Beel (10)
Won at this track and distance first up in a benchmark 94 and was run over late in the 7+ Stakes second up.
Was the subject of good money in the Epsom Handicap two weeks ago but they got to him at the 150m.
5.New Energy (7)
Ran second when making his Australian racing debut back in March but has failed to place since.
Has been far from disgraced in two runs this campaign but this is another step up in grade now.
6.Ceolwulf (2)
Finished second to Riff Rocket in two Group 1 races during the autumn and it’s such a shame we won’t get to see that horse again because this horse has achieved some great things already this spring.
Came from well back in the field to score a dominant win in the Epsom two weeks ago showing his sharp turn of foot, and if he can be in front of Fangirl on the turn, she’ll do very well to go past him late.
7.Celestial Legend (1)
The grey four-year-old is two from two in Group 1 races having won the Randwick Guineas and Doncaster during the autumn.
Of course both of those wins were at this track and distance and although he has been unplaced in two starts this campaign, he will be ready to peak now.
8.Tom Kitten (12)
Was excellent when winning by two lengths when resuming for the first time as a gelding and then had little luck in the Bill Ritchie.
He proved he’s going as well as ever when second behind Ceolwulf in the Epsom Handicap and he’s every chance of producing his second Group 1 win on Saturday.
9.Pride Of Jenni (11)
Has proven her first up run was merely a blemish and that she was severely hampered by an elevated temperature leading into that particular race.
Run down late by Mr Brightside in the Makybe Diva but exacted revenge by winning the Feehan at The Valley.
There is absolutely no speed in this race in a field full of swoopers and I wouldn’t be surprised if she led by a big margin like she did the last time she was at Royal Randwick in the Queen Elizabeth.
10.Fangirl (4)
Chris Waller again saddles up his star mare in an attempt to win her fourth Group 1 race.
She made up considerable ground to win the 7+ Stakes at this track and distance last time out but this is a much bigger field made up of very good horses.
Her racing pattern makes her a dangerous betting proposition especially with a front running horse that has so much speed.
11.Zougotcha (3)
Missed by the barest of margins in the Winx stakes first up behind Via Sistina and that mare has since gone on to win at Group 1 level.
She has won seven times from 12 starts at Group 1 and 2 level but the majority have been against her own sex.
Drawn well and represents great value at her current quote.
12.Amelia’s Jewel (9)
Has been placed in both runs this campaign but still couldn’t get the job done at Group 2 level last start in a race that looked perfect for her.
The 1600m at Randwick looks ideal for her but she will be a long way back and she simply looks a level below these.

2nd: No. 6 Ceolwulf
3rd: No. 1 Pericles
4th: No. 10 Fangirl
