Victoria Derby Tips - Observer to stamp authority with win in three-year-old staying classic

It’s the oldest race on the calendar and once again features a deep line-up of progressive three-year-olds.

All eyes are on Observer ($2.20), the Moonee Valley Vase winner who appears to be the next Maher-trained staying star. His Vase win was deceptively soft — he went just 1.1 lengths faster than standard but had four lengths in hand when eased down by Mark Zahra. 

That followed a luckless Caulfield Guineas third when clocking a 10.5 L faster-than-standard benchmark, a figure superior to anything else in this field. From barrier 4 with Mark Zahra aboard, he maps ideally to sit top four and pounce at the 400 m.

Providence ($8) looks the main danger after charging home for second in the Vase with the fastest last 200m of the race. The Waller camp has won three of the past ten Derbies and the colt’s pedigree (out of a sister to Preferment) screams stamina. 

Autumn Mystery ($9) is the Caulfield Classic winner and continues to progress each start for rookie trainer Rory Hunter. He’s the query horse — a genuine stayer who has the right temperament and turn of foot.

Outside the obvious, Azazel brings Geelong Classic form that has been under question but the New Zealand-bred gelding is honest and stays strongly, while Options and McWoody can both improve if tempo is genuine. Waller’s second runner Savisanta adds another layer of stamina and shapes as a sneaky top-five prospect.

A tricky map over the 2500 m start with a short run to the first turn. Amazake, Autumn Mystery, and Options likely roll forward to control a steady tempo, while Observer tracks just behind from gate 4. Providence and Miewa sit midfield with cover. Azazel and McWoody will settle back and look to run on. A genuine pace would help the closers, but if they crawl early, Observer’s class and tactical speed become even more valuable.

Observer ($2.20) – Simply has a ratings edge on his rivals and looks to possess the right blend of strength and turn of foot. His Caulfield Guineas figure of +10.5 above standard is elite, and his Vase win showed he’ll see out the trip. Draws perfectly and gets Zahra — the Derby specialist.

Arabian Prince ($31) – Needs luck to gain a run but has been hitting the line off slow tempos in shorter races. By Ghaiyyath, he’ll eat up 2500 m and could turn into the blow-out horse if the speed is genuine and he finds a spot midfield with cover.
