- Expect a wet track, making for an even and unpredictable race.
2026 Stradbroke Handicap Preview
Queensland's premier race takes centre stage at Eagle Farm on Saturday with a capacity field assembled for the $3 million Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m).
The Stradbroke is always one of the most fascinating betting races of the season because it brings together weight-for-age stars, emerging three-year-olds and seasoned handicappers under conditions that can completely change the form lines. This year's edition looks no different with a wide-open market headed by Headley Grange, Fangirl and Regal Award.
The Kingsford Smith Cup (1300m) has once again provided the dominant lead-up race and 10 runners come through that form line. Headley Grange was able to break through for a deserved Group 1 victory after producing strong performances throughout the autumn and went more than 10 lengths faster than standard benchmark, which is the best last start figure of any runner in this race.
Fangirl charged home from the rear to produce the fastest last 200m and arguably produced the run of the race, while Another Wil (4th), Transatlantic (5th), Private Eye (6th) and the Doomben 10000 (1200m) winner, Rothfire (7th) all produced respectable runs.
Historically, the Stradbroke is not kind to favourites and it is certainly not kind to horses carrying big weights. Only a handful of runners have managed to carry more than 56kg to victory in the modern era, which is the major knock on Fangirl. The Chris Waller mare, however, brings the strongest overall form into the race and if any horse is capable of defying that statistic, it might just be her.
Regal Award is another that commands respect. The three-year-old finally put everything together in the Fred Best Classic and gets in with a featherweight. If he reproduces that effort against the older horses he is right in the finish. Skyhook (2nd) and Sixties (5th) also come out of that race and will be out to squeeze into the field as they are two of the five emergenices heading in.
After a downpour in Brisbane on Wednesday, we are likely to head in with a track in the Soft to Heavy range but the track should play evenly with horses on the speed and those coming out wide both suited, depending on the speed in the race.
2026 Stradbroke Handicap Speed Map
Transatlantic looks the likely leader and should be positive early despite drawing wide. The Waterhouse and Bott-trained galloper has only one pattern and Tommy Berry is unlikely to die wondering. Sepals, Another Wil and Spicy Martini should all settle close to the speed, while Headley Grange maps ideally one pair back from the leading division. Fangirl should secure cover midfield before looking for clear air in the straight, while Regal Award lands in a perfect stalking position with his lightweight. Further back, runners such as Sixties, Warnie, Splash Back and Cifrado will be relying on a strong tempo to bring them into contention over the final 300m.
2026 Stradbroke Handicap Best Bet- Fangirl
Her Kingsford Smith Cup run was enormous considering the way the race was run. She was spotting the leaders a significant start, charged through the line and now gets to 1400m, which looks much more suitable. She has been competing against the very best horses in the country for several seasons and while the weight is a challenge, class can often overcome statistics. With James McDonald aboard and a race shape that looks likely to suit, she gets her chance to add another Group 1 to an already outstanding career.
2026 Stradbroke Handicap Value Bet- Transatlantic
The market might be overlooking him. He maps as the clear leader in a race where getting control could be a major advantage and he arrives third-up into the preparation, which is traditionally when the stable expects him to produce his best. The 1400m looks ideal, he gets in with just 55kg and has the profile of a horse that can give a huge sight. It was at this stage of his last preparation that he went 15 lenghts faster than standard to claim the Toorak Handicap (1600m), while he went 17 lengths faster over the 1400m at Flemington just prior to that. Stradbroke history has been kind to horses that roll forward and make their own luck and if Tommy Berry can find the front without spending too much petrol, Transatlantic can stick on for a long way. At around the $9-$10 mark he appeals as one of the better value plays in the race.
