The Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes shapes as an enthralling battle with Angel Capital headlining the market off a slick first-up win in the Listed Chautauqua (1200m) at The Valley. 

The Chris Waller-trained galloper brings just 53.5kg, but a wide draw in 13 raises the degree of difficulty. 

Sepals is another big storyline with the lightly raced and rapidly improving gelding at his pet trip. He was explosive at the track and trip at his last start and gets in feather-light at 52kg. 

Four runners come out of the Memsie Stakes (1400m), including Another Wil, who is proven over the Caulfield 1400m horse and draws to advantage, but 59kg is a hefty ask. 

Arkansaw Kid steps up to the 1400m and has been running some slick times over shorter trips, while Miss Roumbini, Damask Rose and Here To Shock are other fancies in the 16-horse field.

Tempo looks genuine with Jennilala a chance to hold the lead with Here To Shock and Zarasto potentially up there, while Another Wil maps to stalk the lead and gets every chance to rebound. Feroce is another that can push across, while dangers like Arkansaw Kid and Miss Roumbini can be smothered up for last-shot runs. Angel Capital might have to get back from the draw, while it is even trickier for Sepals, who may have to push forward from barrier 16 and hope a spot opens up. 

2025 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes Best Bet


Hard to split a few of these. Angel Capital could be anything but the barrier draw makes it a bit tricky. Chris Waller mentioned during the week that the stable may bypass due to a poor draw and head to the Manikato Stakes (1200m) instead. No decision at the time of writing. Sepals was a slashing last start winner and is unbeaten over the 1400m. He draws poorly but the loss to Feroce in the Australian Guineas (1600m) provides a silver lining as he carts just 52kg, while the winner out of that has the 56kg. Given that there looks to be a bit of pace here, the field should string out a bit and Craig Williams can find a spot. Expect the pair to be hard to hold out late in the piece.

Arkansaw Kid comes off a strong win in the Bobbie Lewis Quality (1200m) down the Flemington straight and is regarded more as a sprinter but he does have some respectable form at the distance, having twice placed over the Caulfield 1400m, while he has been consistently punching out some solid benchmark figures for some time now. The Hayes galloper in the Chautauqua colours at his most recent start and seems to be in career best form. Feroce is another to consider at an even bigger price, despite the weight swing against him in comparison to Sepals. He was unsuited over the 1100m at his most recent start when landing four lengths off Arkansaw Kid but will be more of a factor over the 1400m. Expect him to be doing his best work late.
