Railway Stakes Tips - Local fancies to have the edge over eastern seaboard raiders

A full-capacity field has assembled, with dual-figure chances everywhere, but the market is headed by two Grant & Alana Williams-trained runners in Watch Me Rock and Western Empire, who sit tightly bunched at the top after final acceptances.

Depth Of Character arrives from NSW with the best last-start benchmark figure of any runner, having gone nine lengths faster than standard when charging into 4th in the Golden Eagle (1500m). 

His profile mirrors last year’s winner Port Lockroy, but the barrier gods have been unkind — drawing the extreme outside gate makes his task enormous. Osipenko is the other high-profile visitor, fresh off winning the Little Dance at Randwick when 0.9 lengths faster than standard. He is a class act with a peak of 15 lengths faster last season, but like Depth Of Character, maps back and wide from the carpark.

The locals look better placed. Watch Me Rock fits the exact profile of multiple modern Railway winners: a lightly weighted progressive type, peaking third-up and stepping to 1600m. 

His Asian Beau Stakes win was full of authority, running through the line hardest and producing a figure that measures up strongly to this. Western Empire, the 2021 Railway winner, was outstanding late in the Lee Steere — producing the fastest last 200m of the race — but gives away significant weight under the handicap conditions.

The Lee Steere (1400m) itself is tricky to assess. The race was run at extremely slow early tempo, making the form somewhat murky. Super Smink, In Good Order, and Comfort Me filled the trifecta but all enjoyed economical runs close to the speed. In contrast, Western Empire and several others were forced to rely on their late sectionals. Expect significant changes over 1600m with a more genuinely-run race.

The RJ Peters Stakes again presents as a strong reference, with Storyville winning that event with a sharp turn of foot on the rail. She is one of six last-start winners engaged. Another is Diamond Scene, who resumed with a tough win in the Eurythmic Stakes, going +4.5 above standard — the second-best last-start figure in this field. Although he is typically better at 1800m+, his tactical speed and inside draw give him the perfect stalking run.

With eastern raiders drawing wide, locals peaking at the right time, and a genuine tempo expected, this year’s Railway looks primed for a fast-run, high-pressure contest where barriers and race shape will be critical.

Comfort Me, Diamond Scene, Super Smink and In Good Order are the most likely speed influences, with Comfort Me the horse best suited to roll forward and control the race.Diamond Scene should sit just off the leader from barrier 3, getting the perfect trail without doing any early work. Super Smink and In Good Order will slot in behind the leaders from favourable draws.

Watch Me Rock maps ideally on the back of the speed from barrier 4, likely landing one-off the fence in the first six — exactly the pattern that regularly wins a Railway at Ascot.Storyville and Admiration Express settle midfield with cover, while Western Empire, drawn barrier 1, faces a tactical decision: ride for luck and hope gaps appear, or try to get off the fence at the right time.

The three eastern raiders — Depth Of Character (20), Osipenko (17) and Iowna Merc (9) — are all natural backmarkers and will be forced to drag back to avoid being posted wide. They will be spotting the leaders a sizeable head start, and the sweeping nature of Ascot’s bend makes it difficult for deep-run swoopers to win under handicap conditions.

With a genuine tempo and a tightly run first bend, the race sets up perfectly for a horse positioned between 4th and 8th with momentum — the exact scenario for Watch Me Rock and Diamond Scene.

Watch Me Rock is peaking perfectly and strikes an ideal Railway set-up. His Asian Beau Stakes win rated right up to the mark required for this race, and the move to 1600m third-up is exactly what the Williams stable targets for their premier Railway candidate. His draw (4) is perfect for landing just behind a genuinely run tempo, and the decision by William Pike to ride him over Western Empire is a significant pointer.

He has the tactical versatility, the late strength, the right weight (54kg) and the right running pattern for a Railway at Ascot. With clean air at the top of the straight, he is the horse they have to run down.

Diamond Scene is the best value runner in the race and profiles superbly. His first-up Eurythmic win rated +4.5 above standard, the second-best last-start rating among this field. He draws to get the gun run in behind the leader, has tactical speed to hold a position, and being a proven 1800m horse with his Luckygray Stakes win, a high pressure 1600m should suit. He’ll be one of the strongest late when others are paddling. If the leaders overcook it early — and they often do in the Railway — he is the runner who can pounce at double-figure odds. A must for all exotics.
