The Group 1 action continues in Queensland on Saturday May 31 with the running of the the $1 million Kingsford Smith Cup (1300m).
The second of the big sprints in Brisbane follows the Doomben 10000 (1200m) and is a key lead up to the prestigious Stradbroke Handicap (1400m).
Leading the charge is Chris Waller’s top mare Joliestar, who aims to become the first female winner of the race since Black Caviar in 2011. With a strong recent form, including a Group 1 Newmarket Handicap win and a close runner-up in the All Aged Stakes, she enters as the favourite.
However, the daughter of Zoustar will need to overcome a wide barrier and meets elite competition, including the former Everest winner Giga Kick, who will be looking to bounce back after placing 3rd in The Goodwood 1200m in Adelaide.
Four horses come out of the Doomben 10000, including Rothfire (2nd), Payline (3rd), Benedetta (4th) and Libertad (7th). Rothfire went 9.5 lengths slower than standard benchmark in that race, which is just shy of the 10.3 lengths faster that Joliestar produced in the All Aged Stakes.
The field also includes notable runners like Kimochi, Private Eye, and rising colt Bosustow. The latter will be out to become the first three-year-old winner since Your Song in 2013.
Keep an eye on the weather in the lead up to Saturday’s race with rain possible to hit on Friday and Saturday. Joliestar is yet to win in three starts on the Soft and has never raced on the Heavy. Giga Kick, Private Eye, Rothfire, Payline and Rise At Dawn are among a host that will enjoy a Soft deck or worse.
2025 Kingsford Smith Cup Speed Map
Pace should be solid here with Rise At Dawn and Zarasto to take up the running. Golden Mile might tuck in just behind, while Kimochi and Rothfire can utilise their barriers to sit handy. Bosustow might end up midfield and it will be interesting to see where Giga Kick and Joliestar end up after drawing out. Benedetta, Democracy Manifest and Payline are among the backmarkers.
2025 Kingsford Smith Cup Best Bet
Joliestar is the class runner here and should be hard to beat. The four-year-old comes out of a sequence of top flight races and has invariably run well in all of those. The question mark is the barrier but the tempo looks genuine and they should string out a bit, while she gets the best in the business in the saddle, James McDonald, who should be able to find a spot in the running line. The prospect of a Soft track shouldn't be a factor, despite her winless record in three attempts on the going. She was runner-up on he Soft in the All-Aged, while other efforts included a very unlucky 7th in the Everest and a runner-up when a younger horse. She looks rock solid to chalk up another Group 1 win.
2025 Sir Kingsford Smith Cup Value Bet
The old warhorse, Rothfire, is definitely one to consider at the price. The local galloper out of the Rob Heathcote stables at Eagle Farm will have his share of admirers and there was plenty to like about his run in the Doomben 10000 when as game as they come behind Sunshine In Paris. He drew wide and was posted out but kept coming, only to miss in a tight one. The seven-year-old will strip fitter for that effort and love Eagle Farm, while he might be going as well as ever. He wont have to work as hard this time around from barrier 5 and is right in this.
