The Group 1 Kingsford Smith Cup shapes as one of the standout sprint races of the Queensland Winter Carnival, with a deep field packed with proven Group 1 performers converging on Eagle Farm over the 1300m.
The Doomben 10,000 has again emerged as the key lead-up race with six runners coming out of the 1200m Group 1, including the shock winner out of that, Rothfire, as well as the likes of Napoleonic (3rd) and Jimmystar.
The latter just holds favouritism for this race despite being a tad disappointing last time. But the Doomben 10000 was run at a very slow early tempo and the Ciaron Maher-trained galloper should get something more genuine at Eagle Farm. He draws barrier 15 and the rise to the 1300m and spacious Eagle Farm layout should suit ideally.
Fangirl resumes her Brisbane campaign after a strong jumpout alongside Joliestar, with Chris Waller indicating the mare has returned to her best following a delayed autumn that has seen her race only once, for a three-length 7th in a leader dominated All Aged Stakes (1400m) at Randwick.
Plenty of interest in the lead up to Saturday with a deluge forecast in the leads up and the seven-year-old will not want the track to bottom out too much, although her class is undeniable
King Of Roseau has become one of the stories of the race after winning six of his last nine starts, although barrier 21 makes things difficult. Private Eye returns fresh after missing the Doomben 10,000 and his record at this level commands respect, while Transatlantic looks set to peak second-up after a strong return and maps much more favourably than several of his key rivals.
The Kingsford Smith Cup is Race 8 on the day at Eagle Farm and follows the Queensland Derby.

Rothfire and Zou Sensation are possible leaders but Transatlantic should push across and take up the running from barrier 5. Private Eye maps for a soft run from barrier 2 and should enjoy every chance stalking the tempo. Jimmysstar and Fangirl will likely drift back from their wide draws and look to launch late, while King Of Roseau faces a tricky task from the outside barrier and may need to settle near the rear. Expect genuine pressure throughout with several horses wanting prominent positions early.

His Doomben 10,000 run was full of merit after getting trapped away on the inside before attacking the line late. Eagle Farm and the rise to 1300m suit perfectly, while Ciaron Maher has indicated the gelding has trained on strongly since Doomben. If he gets clear air at the right time, he looks the horse with the best finish in the race.

Slight question mark on his class but the Queenslander did defeat Rothfire when resuming and that horse went on to claim the Doomben 10000. He failed second up at his last preparation but was excellent just under a year ago when second up, improving nine lengths on benchmark figures to finish runner-up in the Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) behind War Machine. The six-year-old has never finished out of the top two in seven goes at the track, winning four and with any luck from the wide gate, he is definitely one that can bob up at a big price in what is an open race.
