Can Cool Archie take his winning streak to five with victory in the Group 1 J J Atkins at Eagle Farm on Saturday?
The Chris & Corey Munce-trained colt has been the standout two-year-old of the Queensland winter carnival, following dominant wins in the Group 2 Spirit Of Boom Classic and BRC Sires' Produce Stakes.
Six runners come out of the Sires Produce, which was run on a Heavy 10 track at Eagle Farm a fortnight ago, including Call Da Vinci and Torque To Be Sure, who filled the minor placings.
Grafterburners was 6th in that race but might be the pick of those that wre left in Cool Archie’s wake. He was hampered by a wide run and gets a better draw, this time around
The JJ Atkins field also features strong interstate interest, including Chris Waller’s Hidden Achievement, who shares the second line of betting with Grafterburners at $6. Waller has won this race on three occasions.
Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott’s Farnicle, runner-up to Cool Archie in the Sires’, and Michael Freedman’s Aerodrome are both at $8 and are considered legitimate threats.
However, all eyes remain on Cool Archie, who is aiming to become just the fifth horse to complete the Sires’/Atkins double—an achievement most recently accomplished by Broadsiding. With $1 million on the line and a stacked 17-horse field, Saturday’s JJ Atkins promises to be a thrilling test of the season’s best juveniles.

Tempo should be even here with Farnicle and Zoutanium both chances to hold the lead, while Meet George and Aerodrome will work across. Some of the big names, including Grafterburners, Hidden Achievement and Navy Pilot tend to get back but will get their chance. Cool Archie might settle a fraction closer this time around from the better barrier and can tuck into a midfield position.
2025 J J Atkins Best Bet
Hard not to be impressed by what Cool Archie has done so far and he had panels on those that come out of the BRC Sires Produce Stakes. That was run on a Heavy track but he has been equally as effective on better surfaces and it is hard to find a chink in his armour, while the son of Cool Aza Beel gives the impression that the step up to the 1600m should only suit even more.
2025 J J Atkins Value Bet
The slight question mark out of Cool Archie’s form is the figures from his recent races. His personal best came two starts ago when going 3.3 lengths faster than standard benchmark in the Spirit Of Boom Classic. Money has come since the barrier draw for Navy Pilot, who closed off well in solid fashion in the Show A Heart Classic (1500m) last weekend. The Ciaron Maher-trained galloper went 8.7 lengths faster than standard benchmark, which is a better figure than what any horse in this race has produced and is worth something at the each-way quote.
