The Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) at Rosehill on Saturday brings together the fillies and mares and it is tight at the top of the betting with Lazzura and Savvy Hallie vying for favouritism.
The race has historically been one of the tougher Group 1 contests for favourites, with only five market leaders winning since 2003. Recent history also highlights the importance of lead-up form, with 34 of the past 41 winners finishing in the top four at their previous start.
A key reference this year is the Group 2 Millie Fox Stakes which produced a strong performance from the progressive Cinsault, who clocked a figure 5.5 lengths faster than standard benchmark. Lazzura was narrowly beaten in that race when resuming and that form line looks a major guide coming into Saturday’s feature.
Another significant lead-up was the Guy Walter Stakes where Verona Rose produced a strong performance running four lengths faster than standard benchmark. Several runners exit that race and it shapes as another important piece of form tying this year’s field together.
Among the leading contenders, Ole Dancer arrives third-up following a strong 3rd placing in the Group 1 Surround Stakes. The Thousand Guineas winner has already proven her class at the elite level and profiles to peak here. Savvy Hallie also comes through the Surround Stakes where she ran 6.7 lengths faster than standard benchmark when finishing runner-up and commands respect despite drawing wide.
Chris Waller holds a strong hand in the race once again with Lazzura and Firestorm in the field, while improving mares such as Manaal, Cinsault, Arctic Glamour and Verona Rose add further depth to a race that often produces surprises.
2026 Coolmore Classic Speed Map
The speed map suggests a moderate to genuine tempo with Savvy Hallie likely to roll forward from a wide draw and attempt to cross early. Ole Dancer and Manaal should also press on from favourable positions and ensure the pace is solid through the early stages.
Just behind that leading division should be runners such as Lazzura, Cinsault and Verona Rose who map to enjoy economical runs in the first half of the field. That positioning could prove critical given the expected pressure up front.
Backmarkers including Firestorm, Vivy Air and Melody Again are likely to settle well back and attempt to build momentum late, relying on tempo and clear running to bring their closing sectionals into play.
With several natural on-pace runners engaged, the race shape should allow horses settling midfield with cover to launch into the race turning for home, which may prove the ideal position.
2026 Coolmore Classic Best Bet
Lazzura shapes as the best bet in the 2026 Coolmore Classic and looks ideally placed to peak third-up in this year’s edition.
The Chris Waller trained mare resumed with a narrow runner-up finish in the Millie Fox Stakes, one of the key form references for this race, and was only beaten narrowly despite giving the winner Cinsault a strong challenge late.
Importantly, Lazzura meets Cinsault no worse at the weights here and should strip fitter second-up into this preparation.
Her previous campaign also demonstrated significant improvement at this stage of preparation when she improved five lengths to claim the Let’s Elope Stakes (1400m) at Flemington. If she produces a similar progression here she profiles as the class runner in the race.
From a map perspective she should enjoy a comfortable midfield run behind the speed which historically has proven an ideal position in the Coolmore Classic. With strong benchmark figures and a proven Group 1 profile, Lazzura looks the runner to beat.
2026 Coolmore Classic Value Bet
Firestorm looks an intriguing value play in the Coolmore Classic at double-figure odds.
She finished runner-up in this race last year and while her form since then has been somewhat mixed, she has repeatedly produced strong closing sectionals when conditions suit.
A key factor here is the weight relief she receives compared to previous runs in and the race tempo could play to her strengths.
With Savvy Hallie likely to push forward early from a wide draw and other runners capable of applying pressure on the speed, the race could set up nicely for runners coming from the back half of the field.
Firestorm’s closing speed figures remain among the strongest in the field and if the tempo lifts through the middle stages she has the ability to charge late and figure prominently again in this race.
