Caulfield Guineas Tips - Golden Rose form to hold up in the Caulfield Guineas yet again

The $3 million feature at Caulfield on Saturday brings together the standout colts from Sydney and Melbourne, headlined by Chris Waller’s dual assault with Wodeton and Autumn Boy. Both come through the Golden Rose (1400m), historically the key formline into this race, and each represents contrasting setups — Autumn Boy looking to emulate his sire The Autumn Sun from an inside draw, while Wodeton appears perfectly placed to sit midfield and pounce late.

Locally, Matt Laurie’s trio adds intrigue, led by Vinrock, a classy Flemington winner who endured a luckless Stutt Stakes run but looks primed for his “Grand Final.” His wide draw isn’t ideal, but his racing pattern and stamina-infused pedigree (by I Am Invincible out of Girl Gone Rockin’) suggest he’ll be strong late if the race is genuinely run. 

Stablemates Vega For Luck and Prestige Ole are longer-priced hopes, with Vega For Luck offering some upside after an eye-catching Guineas Prelude performance. Others worth noting include Navy Pilot, who maps for a soft run near the speed, and Planet Red, who could surprise if ridden more positively after finding trouble last start.

Beyond the form and tactics, the Caulfield Guineas holds immense prestige as the premier mile contest for Australian three-year-olds — a Group 1 that shapes breeding futures and sets the spring agenda. Many past winners have gone on to claim the Cox Plate or Victoria Derby, while the interstate rivalry between Sydney’s Golden Rose form and Melbourne’s traditional pathways adds extra spice. Early tempo looks genuine in this year’s Caulfield Guineas, with several key runners expected to push forward from wide draws to secure a position before the first bend. West Of Swindon is likely to spear across from barrier 16 to attempt a forward spot after leading throughout to win at The Valley, while Vinrock (14) won’t want to be caught deep and should roll forward into a handy position just off the speed. Vega For Luck, drawn well in seven, has tactical speed and can track the leaders, with Navy Pilot (2) and Planet Red (4) both settling in the first half of the field from economical gates. Wodeton maps beautifully midfield one-off the fence, giving James McDonald options to blend into the race from the 600m, while Autumn Boy (1) risks being cluttered up on the rails early and will need luck when the field fans on the turn. Expect a solid tempo throughout, with the leading brigade keen to control the race early and strong closers like Vinrock and Wodeton poised to launch late in a truly run mile.

Keen on Wodeton in the Caulfield Guineas. The Chris Waller colt comes off a runner-up behind Beiwacht in the Golden Rose (1400m) at Rosehill, a race that has proved to be an excellent tune up to the Guineas. In the Golden Rose, Wodeton was well beaten by four lengths but the winner broke records that day, while Wodeton closed off with the fastest last 200m, going 10.4 lenghts faster than standard benchmark, which is the best last start figure of any runner. Vinrock is the only horse in this race that has produced a slightly better figure. The son of Wooten Bassett draws a tad awkwardly but will be ridden by the best in the land, James McDonald, and we can expect him to be hard to hold out at the business end. 

This race has thrown up the odd surprise result and Observer might be one to consider at a price. The Ciaron Maher galloper in the Godolphin colours faces a massive class rise and could only manage a runner-up over the 1300m in a BenchMark 66 when resuming. But the stable have a history of their younger gallopers producing massive spikes and at the second run of his debut preparation, he was an eight length improver on benchmark figures when scoring at Sandown in dominant fashion when rising in trip. Outside of the top three in the market this does look to be an even race and he is one worth having a throw at the stumps on.
