Caulfield Guineas Tips - Runner-by-Runner Guide for the 3YO Group 1
- Broadsiding, the dominant favourite, eyes a Caulfield win
- Evaporate showcases a promising unbeaten streak
- Mayfair promises a strong contention at 1600m
The Group 1 Caulfield Guineas is the stallion making race for many three-year-old colts and is run over 1600m at Caulfield racecourse at set weights.
The race was first run in 1881 and has been won by some champion horses including Ajax (1937), Tulloch (1957) and Lonhro (2001).
We have a very short favourite in this year’s final field but we have gone through every runner below and offered our thoughts.
1. Broadsiding (9)
Put together four wins in a row during his last campaign culminating with a dominant win in the Group 1 J.J Atkins at Eagle Farm.
Stamped himself as the premiere three-year-old colt in the country with a first up win in thh Golden Rose and should go close to winning this event with even luck.
2. Rue De Royale (6)
Broke through for his maiden race win at Bendigo at start eight two back and was beaten over three lengths behind Evaporate at The Valley last time out.
Would need to improve dramatically to be a place chance.
3. Evaporate (8)
Has built a nice little picket fence by winning his last four in a row by a combined eight lengths leading into his first Group 1 event.
Came from fifth at the turn at The Valley to win the Group 2 Stutt Stakes and if he can continue to progress, he can be a threat.
4. Angel Capital (7)
Was beaten over six lengths by Broadsiding in the Sires Produce in Brisbane during the winter and although he’s clearly come back a better colt, I’d be stunned i he can turn the tables on the favourite.
5. Mayfair (10)
This son of Fastnet Rock is yet to miss a place in five career race starts and was beaten less than half a length behind Broadsiding in the Golden Rose.
Went down by a nose to Lady Shenandoah two starts ago and that filly came out and won the Group 1 Flight Stakes on the weekend.
Will appreciate the step up to 1600m and he is one of the main players.
6. Wanaruah (3)
Won his first two starts by a combined 4.3 lengths as a two-year-old and has placed in both starts so far this campaign.
I’m not sure the Guineas Prelude is the right form but if he can continue to improve, he can fill a place.
7. Public Attention (4)
Won his maiden on debut here at Caulfield back in July and then had a six week break between runs.
Did plenty wrong in the Guineas Prelude but still managed to finish second.
Drawn well.
8. Feroce (2)
Won his first two race starts but has failed to placed in three subsequent runs when stepping up in grade.
Not for me.
9. Tropicus (1)
Placed behind Storm Boy first up but has been well held in his last couple including a seventh in the Golden Rose.
Should have a fitness edge on a few of these and is ready to peak now.
10. Vianarra (11)
Yet to win a race from 10 attempts and was beaten in a maiden at Sandown two starts back.
11. Private Life (5)
Solid win at Warwick Farm first up in a benchmark 64 and was beaten less than a length in the Guineas Prelude second up.
Should get his chance from a good draw in barrier five.
