- Will odds-on favourite Think About It take the prize?
The Group 1 Canterbury Stakes is run over 1300m at Randwick racecourse under weight-for-age conditions.
The race was first run in 1929 and has been won by some champion horses including Manikato (1982), Places Ark (1987) and More Joyous (2011,12).
We have a small field assembled this year and we’ve gone through them all below with odds from BoomBet.
1. Think About It (8)
The son of So You Think has won 11 of his 13 career starts including two at the highest level and over $11 million in prize money.
His streak of nine consecutive wins was broken at the end of his last campaign after he had managed to win riches of The Everest.
He’s had two solid trials leading into this first up assignment and I love the fact the stable is starting him out at 1300m.
2. Pericles (1)
He has just the four wins to his name from 15 starts but he has been placed in 11 of those.
He was somewhat disappointing first up but bounced back to a semblance of his best form when second to Mr Brightside at Caulfield last start over 1400m.
Will be nearing peak fitness at his third run and should feature.
3. Coal Crusher (5)
Was beaten less than half a length when resuming at Group 2 level behind King Of Sparta and was a little flat late last time out.
Would need to improve again to be a chance.
4. Bandersnatch (3)
Failed to win during his last campaign but still managed to go past the $1 million in prize money.
Has had five goes at Group 1 level without a place but was beaten only 1.4 lengths in the Sir Rupert Clarke to finish his spring campaign.
5. Malkovich (4)
Has placed in both starts so far this prep at Group level including a third, beaten less than a length behind King Of Sparta last time out.
He has always been a bit of a short course specialist and while this is his first go beyond 1200m, he’s drawn well and should land on the speed.
6. Espiona (2)
Was doing her best work late when resuming in the Black Caviar Lightning down the Flemington straight, beaten under a length behind Imperatriz.
She has won three times from five second up runs during her career and handles all surfaces.
Right in this.
7. Lady Laguna (6)
Has been polkaed in her last 11 in a row including top two finishes in all five runs this campaign.
A mare racing incredibly consistently and has been really placed.
Gets her chance in a Group 1 and she’s the x-factor in the race.
