2026 Blue Diamond Stakes Preview
The $2m Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) is the highlight of a huge day of racing at Caulfield on Saturday and pits some of the most promising two-year-olds up against one another.
12 of the field of 20 (including the four emergencies) are colts and geldings, while eight are fillies.
One of the key references for the
feature race was when the boys tackled the Blue Diamond Prelude (Colts & Geldings) over the 1100m, where Closer To Free defeated Guest House and Eternal Warrior in a performance that rated eight lengths faster than standard benchmark.
That figure is elite for a juvenile at this stage of the preparation and puts that trio right at the centre of the race. Guest House’s run was arguably even better than it looks on paper after duffing the start and racing fiercely yet still finishing runner-up, highlighting significant upside if he can settle and run his sectionals evenly.
On the fillies’ side, Streisand was solid winning her Prelude, rating 5.7 lengths faster than standard benchmark. She showed tactical speed and strength late, and from barrier 12 she maps to roll forward or sit just off the main speed. I Am Aria and Lady Moscato also add depth to the early pace profile, ensuring this won’t be a slowly run Diamond if jockeys press their advantage.
Big Sky brings arguably the most exciting profile into the race. The Chairman’s Stakes winner has been dominant in both starts to date and went 4.9 lengths faster than standard benchmark in that Caulfield victory.
He draws ideally in barrier 5 and looks the runner most likely to control his own race shape. The step from 1000m to 1200m is the query, but his racing pattern and strength through the line suggest he’ll run it strongly.
Unit Five adds another unbeaten layer to the race. The Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner has already proven himself at 1200m and brings race fitness and experience from high-pressure company. Although drawn barrier 11, he has the tactical versatility to slot midfield and blend into the race at the right time.
Further down the market, Eternal Warrior, Milsons Point, Alibaba and Zambales all bring different angles. Eternal Warrior produced the fastest last 200m in the Prelude, Milsons Point worked home strongly off a very slow tempo in the Preview, Alibaba must overcome a wide gate but has shown talent, while Zambales has the blinkers on first time for a stable with a superb Blue Diamond record.
2026 Blue Diamond Stakes Speed Map
Expect genuine tempo early. Big Sky (5) should push forward and either lead or sit outside the leader. Guest House (3) has the gate to hold a prime position and may look to find the fence. Lady Moscato (2) can kick up, while Closer To Free (9), Ghana’s Akan (7) and Zambales (8) all have the speed to be prominent without being caught deep if ridden positively.
Midfield runners such as Unit Five (11) and Milsons Point (10) should get cover and be building momentum from the 600m. Streisand (12) and I Am Aria (6) can stalk the speed, while the wider-drawn Eternal Warrior (16) and Alibaba (17) will likely be relying on tempo and clear air to unleash their closing sectionals.
2026 Blue Diamond Stakes Best Bet
Big Sky profiles as the colt with the right blend of map, figures and upside. His Chairman’s Stakes win rated well and he did it with authority at Caulfield. From barrier 5 he can settle on speed without working overtime, which is crucial in a high-pressure two-year-old Group 1. If he begins cleanly and finds his rhythm, he looks the runner most capable of controlling the race. With natural improvement from first to second start already evident, another step forward third-up into the Diamond makes him the one they have to run down over the final 300m.
2026 Blue Diamond Stakes Value Bet
Eternal Warrior appeals as the strong each-way play. His closing splits in the Prelude were outstanding, recording the fastest last 200m of the race. If the leaders overdo it early, he is the runner most likely to be charging late and capitalising on a genuine tempo.
Milsons Point is the improver. He ran on strongly in the Preview behind Alibaba off a very slow tempo over 1000m and looks suited stepping to 1200m. Drawn to land midfield with cover, he has scope for improvement and can be the one finishing over the top if the race sets up for a swooper.
