The Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) headlines Flemington on Saturday and while numbers may be down, quality is not.
The race has taken on a “match-race” feel between Observer and Sixties, the two colts who have scared off a host of potential rivals in the Melbourne autumn feature race.
History says the key lead-ups are the Group 3 C.S. Hayes Stakes and the Group 2 Autumn Stakes. Seventeen Guineas winners have come through the C.S. Hayes and ten via the Autumn Stakes, with multiple runners from both races lining up again here.
Sixties produced the best last start benchmark figure of any runner when going 10.3 lengths faster than standard benchmark to take out the C.S. Hayes Stakes (1400m). He sat wide on the circle and still had the audacity to put them away late, improving sharply second-up and confirming the promise he showed when breaking his maiden by seven lengths last prep.
Observer, however, was equally as strong first-up. He went 8.8 lengths faster than standard benchmark winning the Autumn Stakes (1400m), and that figure sits just below the 10.5 lengths faster than standard benchmark he produced when desperately unlucky in the Caulfield Guineas last spring. Since then, he has added a Moonee Valley Vase and Victoria Derby to his CV, stamping himself as the proven Group 1 performer in the field.
Planet Red, who has a two-to-one head-to-head edge over Observer, was solid running on in the Autumn Stakes and meets him on level terms here. He has already proven himself at 1600m in the Caulfield Guineas and looks suited by Flemington’s long straight.
Further down the market, West Of Swindon and Romantic Encounter both come through the C.S. Hayes. The latter raced keenly yet stuck on for fourth and shapes as a horse who can improve sharply if he settles. Victorious Spirit hit the line well in the Autumn Stakes and looks like the mile will suit.
This is a race that often crowns a genuine star – from Zabeel and Mahogany to Shamus Award, Mystic Journey and Hitotsu – and Saturday’s edition looks likely to add another high-class name to that honour roll.
2026 Australian Guineas Speed Map
Observer (6) has the tactical speed to roll forward and either lead or control from outside the leader. That could be crucial in a race lacking obvious pressure.
Sixties (10) may need to work from a wider gate but has shown he can absorb pressure and still finish off. Planet Red (9) is likely to land midfield with cover, stalking the tempo. Romantic Encounter (5) and West Of Swindon (3) can settle handy, while Victorious Spirit (7) and the remainder look to be conceding a start and relying on genuine tempo.
If Observer is allowed to dictate at a steady clip before building from the 600m, it could turn into a real test of class from the 400m home.
2026 Australian Guineas Best Bet
Observer looks the most complete horse in the race. He brings proven Group 1 form, has already won a Victoria Derby at Flemington and resumed with a figure of 8.8 lengths faster than standard benchmark in the Autumn Stakes. His Caulfield Guineas run at 10.5 lengths faster than standard benchmark remains one of the best pieces of form in the field. He maps to control the race on his own terms and, at the mile, looks ideally suited to absorb pressure and kick strongly. If he dictates, he is the one they have to run down.
2026 Australian Guineas Value Bet
Romantic Encounter appeals at longer odds. He raced keenly in the C.S. Hayes yet still stuck on for fourth and can improve sharply if he settles better at 1600m. With the right run just behind the speed, he has the upside to spike. West Of Swindon also adds value if the tempo lifts and he can blend into the race late.
