2026 Australian Derby Preview

A capacity-quality field of 13 heads to Randwick for the time honoured 2400m Group 1 for the three-year-olds and it is Observer that will be out to land a rare double.

The Godolphin galloper took out the Victoria Derby (2500m) in the spring,a feat achieved recently by Hitotsu and Riff Rocket, but will need to bounce back after a slightly disappointing performance when 3rd in the Rosehill Guineas (2000m).

The Rosehill Group 1 is the obvious form reference with Autumn Boy taking that out. He drops in trip to line up in the Doncaster Mile. Seven of the field of 13 come out of that race, including Green Spaces, who was the eye-catcher there, charging home into second after losing momentum at a key stage and ripping home with the fastest final 200m of the race.

The way he relaxed over 2000m suggested the rise to 2400m is exactly what he has been looking for, and from barrier six Rachel King should be able to slot him into a sweet stalking role.

Observer remains the horse with the profile. His Australian Guineas (1600m) prior to that win showed his class and his Victoria Derby triumph last spring stamped him as a genuine stayer.

Rosehill was his first go at the Sydney way of going and on a Soft track. The key might be if Randwick avoids the showers forecast- at the time of writing, between 0-8mm may land on Saturday.
Storm Leopard adds genuine intrigue on the seven-day backup after a dominant Tulloch Stakes (2000m) win. Tommy Berry barely had to move on him late and the gelding gave every indication that 2400m will suit even better. History is on his side too, with the Tulloch producing multiple recent Derby winners.

The Kiwi raider Road To Paris brings hard staying credentials after his New Zealand Derby (2400m) success. Zac Purton takes over and while barrier 10 is awkward, the smaller field means he should still settle within striking range. His ability to conserve energy and unleash late makes him one of the more dangerous closers.

Of the others, Savisanta and Kaye Jay come through the Alister Clark Stakes at Caulfield, where Savisanta produced the strongest last-start benchmark figure of any runner in this field, running 11 lengths faster than standard. That makes the mare an interesting knockout if the race turns into a genuine staying test.

Historically, the Derby has rewarded proven classic form and horses already tested at 2000m+, and that brings the Rosehill Guineas and Tulloch form right to the top again.

2026 Australian Derby Speed Map

Observer maps to roll forward from the outside draw and can work across to either lead or sit outside the speed, which is where his best form has come from. Green Spaces should enjoy a perfect run from barrier 6, landing just behind the leaders with cover.

Storm Leopard has enough tactical speed to hold a prominent midfield spot, while Road To Paris from gate 10 should drift back slightly before building into the race from the 800m.

Savisanta and Bingi are likely to settle midfield with cover, while Federalist profiles as one of the value runners charging late from the back half after being unsuited by the dawdling Rosehill Guineas tempo.

The map suggests only a moderate tempo early unless McDonald decides to be aggressive aboard Observer. If that happens, it could string the field out and turn it into a true staying contest, which would suit the proven Derby horses.

2026 Australian Derby Best Bet

Observer

He was a touch disappointing in the Rosehill Guineas, but there were excuses. The tempo was against him and he still stuck on soundly, while it was his first go on the Slow. The move to 2400m is ideal, James McDonald goes on, and the wide draw may actually help him build momentum and find his rhythm rather than get cluttered away on the fence. His Victoria Derby win fourth-up last spring is the perfect profile match and if Randwick stays in the Good range, he can bounce back in a big way.

Federalist

Still a maiden, but there is genuine upside at the price. He was one of the horses badly suited by the slow Rosehill Guineas tempo and still kept finding the line. From a race shape perspective, a stronger Derby tempo and the rise to 2400m look exactly what he wants. If they overdo it up front, he’s the one charging into the finish at juicy odds.
