2026 Doncaster Mile Preview
Sheza Alibi will justify the favouritism tag with a win in the time-honoured Doncaster Mile.
The Peter Moody & Katherine Coleman-trained filly comes off a devastating Randwick Guineas (1600m) win, where she sat off speed and put the race away in a few strides, beating Autumn Boy by over three lengths.
That form has already been franked with Autumn Boy stepping straight out to win the
Rosehill Guineas (2000m) and she went 12.2 lengths faster than standard benchmark, while she drops 5.5kg.
Autumn Boy is the obvious danger and the drop back to the Randwick mile is no knock given how tough this race is run, and the reapplication of blinkers is a crucial gear change. Barrier 1 is the query. He maps to hold a spot, but Kerrin McEvoy will need luck at the right time.
That pair are among four horses aged three with the youngsters dominating the top lines of betting. Sixties is third favourite in the market, while Attica shapes as a value player ar around the $20.
The
George Ryder Stakes is the major older-horse form reference with seven runners coming through that race. Gringotts was excellent there behind the unbeaten Autumn Glow and now gets the perfect low draw in barrier two despite lumping the 58.5kg topweight. He’s an absolute iron horse who has carried big weights before and his toughness makes him impossible to leave out. Pericles was 3rd in the same race and is one of the most proven in the field.
Headley Grange is the progressive danger from the George Ryder line. His sectionals have been outstanding in both runs this prep and he looks set to peak fourth-up at the Randwick mile. Barrier seven maps beautifully for the stalking role just off the speed.
At bigger odds, Cristal Clear profiles as the forgotten horse. He has continued to improve since spring, where he mixed it in races like the Golden Eagle and Big Dance, and his Ajax Stakes win suggested he has come back a stronger, more mature four-year-old. The 50kg and barrier eight give him every chance to stalk the right run.
Lightweight roughies such as Vivy Air, Scheelite and Steparty also add depth, with Steparty particularly interesting after producing the best last-start benchmark figure of any horse in the field, running 16.6 lengths faster than standard off a brutal All-Star Mile setup.
2026 Doncaster Mile Speed Map
Pericles and Cristal Clear map as the likely leaders, with both drawn to roll across and use their natural on-speed patterns. Linebacker and Headley Grange should land in the ideal on-pace/midfield stalking lanes.
Sheza Alibi from barrier 13 looks perfectly suited to slide in midfield three-deep with cover, exactly where Jamie Melham will want her. The long Randwick run to the turn removes the normal concern of a wide gate.
Autumn Boy from barrier one is the map horse everyone will watch. He should settle just behind the leaders, but the risk is getting cluttered away on the fence as the field compresses before the rise.
Gringotts gets the perfect soft trail from gate two, while Attica and Encap both map as backmarkers who may need luck from inside draws.
The race shape looks genuine without being brutal, which should suit horses with the ability to build through their gears from the 600m.

Sheza Alibi
She is the real deal. Her Randwick Guineas win was elite, the benchmark figure was enormous, and the fact Autumn Boy has since won the Rosehill Guineas only elevates the form further. The 49kg is the killer edge, the barrier is a plus rather than a negative, and the race map gives Jamie Melham complete control. She looks the next three-year-old star to own this race.

Cristal Clear
A forgotten runner in the market and exactly the type that can run a monster race in a Doncaster. Progressive four-year-old, strong through the grades in spring, excellent Ajax Stakes winner this prep and now drops to 50kg from a perfect draw. He maps to get the dream trail just behind the speed and looks primed to peak on the big stage.

Gringotts
Topweight is the only knock, but barrier two is perfect and his George Ryder run was excellent. If the track softens at all, he becomes a massive player and is the type you simply have to save on at the quote or include in trifecta's, first four's and same race multi's.
