The 2025 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) shapes as a battle between raw class and proven staying strength — a race that has launched future Derby stars from Dundeel to Ace High and Montefilia.

This year’s $2 million edition features several runners coming through the Gloaming Stakes (1800m), traditionally the key lead-up. The winner out of that, Shangri La Boy, heads in as a $3.30 favourite for the Spring Champion and went five lengths faster than standard overall, controlling the race from the front and sustaining pressure from the 600m.

It was a true staying test, and he clocked 11.34s for his final 200m — the sixth-fastest closing split of the meeting, remarkable given his on-pace role. Drawn ideally in barrier 2, Nash Rawiller should have the option to lead or sit leaders’ back, depending on early intent from Officiate or Southern Prince. Expect a similar pattern: roll at even fractions, kick at the bend, and make them chase.

Attica draws wide and enters in as a $4 second favourite. The Godolphin galloper all but matched Shangri La Boy on benchmark figures (4.8 lengths faster) in his last start Dulcify Stakes (1600m) win.

Trainer Joe Pride skipped the Gloaming in favour of a Warwick Farm trial, and the Lonhro colt looked sharper, finishing third under his own steam. He maps midfield to three-wide with cover from barrier 13, and with his electric turn of foot, Adam Hyeronimus will likely time his run from the 600m to sweep into the race. The step to 2000m is the unknown, but the data from his Dulcify closing sectionals suggests he should run it — if he relaxes early.

The best last-start figure belongs to Within The Law ($6), who went 8.8 lengths faster than standard when tackling older Group 1 performers in the King Charles III Stakes (1600m).

That figure dwarfs the rest of the field and signals she has genuine top-end ability. The Bjorn Baker-trained filly gets 2kg off the boys and although she’s drawn wide (15), she can drop back and produce one devastating run late. If the pace is strong, her -10.9 last 600m figure makes her the knockout hope.

The Hawkes-trained Federalist ($6) is a possible improver. He was 4th behind Attica in the Dulcify and profiles as one that will relish 2000m. Tyler Schiller takes over, and with natural progression, he’s a value inclusion for exotics.

Among the fillies, Sheeza Diva ($21) deserves respect. She ran the fastest last 400m (22.24s) and 200m (11.04s) in the Gloaming and shapes as the big closer if they overdo it early. She’ll likely settle rear half under Rachel King and look to thread through late — exactly the kind of filly that can swoop into the placings at odds.

Historically, this race has been a proven springboard for Derby types — and both Attica and Shangri La Boy fit that mould. But it’s the tempo and early tactics that will dictate terms: if the leaders get away with it, Shangri La Boy holds the advantage. If the middle stages turn tactical and they bunch up, Attica’s turn of foot could break the race open.

2025 Spring Champion Stakes Speed Map

Shangri La Boy (2) likely rolls forward to control tempo with Officiate (4) and Southern Prince (7) in close attendance. Federalist (14) and Attica (13) slide across midfield, while Within The Law (15) and Sheeza Diva (9) drift back to find cover. Expect a genuine gallop early (benchmark pace +2 to +4), ideal for strong-late runners.

If Rawiller dictates evenly through the mid-race (between -2 and +2), he’ll force those behind to sprint off the bridle. But if Shinn-style aggression comes from wide runners like Federalist mid-race, it’ll set up for the closers.

2025 Spring Champion Stakes Best Bet

Shangri La Boy- His Gloaming win was dominant and sustainable, and he maps to get every favour from barrier 2 under Nash Rawiller. Handles the rise to 2000m, controls the tempo, and keeps finding under pressure. Genuine Group 1 staying colt in the making.

2025 Spring Champion Stakes Value Bet

Sheeza Diva — Ran -8.4 final 600m off a solid Gloaming tempo, the fastest closer of the race. Outside of the top three in the market, this is wide open. Drawn well enough to slot midfield and saved for one run, she’s the knockout filly at big odds who can flash late into the finish.
