2026 Robert Sangster Stakes Preview

The fillies and mares go at it for Group 1 glory in the Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) and it is Point Barrow that heads in as favourite for the $1 million feature.

The Victorian is one of two contenders in the race that are aged three, sitting alongside My Gladiola, who is not without a chance at the each-way quote.

Point Barrow missed out as favourite when resuming in the Oakleigh Plate (1100m) but that run was full of merit and she was dominant at Group 3 level at her last start while she was an improver with racing at her last campaign.

It is an open market with last year’s Robert Sangster Stakes winner, Charm Stone, well in contention after her 4th in the William Reid Staks (1200m), while there is some solid Sydney based form through the likes of Skybird, who was 3rd in the TJ Smith Stakes (1200m), while Generosity and Bridal Waltz come out of the Galaxy.

Skybird comes in with the best last start benchmark figures, having produced a career best by going 13.7 lengths faster than standard benchmark in the TJ, just shading Charm Stone (12.2 lengths faster in the William Reid).

The RN Irwin Stakes (1100m) is a key local form reference, and Super Smink comes through that race with enormous upside after producing the fastest late splits to win first-up. Historically, that race has produced strong Sangster contenders, and she looks set to improve sharply second-up.

With multiple form lines converging and a typically high-pressure sprint expected, this shapes as a genuinely run Group 1 where race tempo and late speed will be decisive.

2026 Robert Sangster Stakes Speed Map

The 1200m start at Morphettville generally favours runners who can find cover early before producing late, and this year’s map suggests a genuinely run race.

Bossy Benita looks the most likely to roll forward and set the tempo, with Bridal Waltz also expected to push up and settle in the first few. That ensures a strong early speed, bringing the backmarkers into play.

Charm Stone and Skybird should both find midfield positions with cover, ideally suited to strike late, while Super Smink maps to settle just worse than midfield, allowing her to build into the race second-up.

Point Barrow from the wide draw is likely to drift back and find cover, which may prove advantageous given the expected tempo. That setup gives her clear running late and plays into her strengths as a strong finisher.

Benedetta maps midfield and should get a clean run, while runners like Generosity and Ameena may find themselves slightly further back needing luck.

2026 Robert Sangster Stakes Best Bet

Point Barrow looks perfectly placed to peak third-up and take out the Sangster.

Her first-up run in the Oakleigh Plate was excellent in a high-pressure race, and she improved sharply second-up with a dominant Group 3 win against her own sex.

She went 1.8 lengths faster than standard in that race, coming off a slow early tempo to go 22.52 over the last 400m. The Anthony & Sam Freedman-trained galloper does look to have a bit of upside as a younger horse and spiked nearly eight lengths on figures at this stage of her last preparation.

The wide barrier should allow her to find cover early and build into the race, which looks a major advantage given the expected tempo. With speed engaged up front and the race likely to be run to suit, she profiles as the runner most likely to finish over the top late.

2026 Robert Sangster Stakes Value Bet

Bridal Waltz is a strong value play in a wide-open race.

She maps to land in the first six, likely stalking the speed just behind Bossy Benita, which is the ideal position given the race setup. That gives her every chance to strike at the right time.

Her previous runs over 1200m have been strong winning two and placing in another two, with those coming behind War Machine in the Gilgai Stakes and Jigsaw in the McEwan Plate, with the latter going on a winning rampage since then. Bridal Waltz has produced very solid figures in all of them, going at around 10 lengths faster than standard.

Her last-start run in the Galaxy can be forgiven, where she was caught wide but still finished within a length of the winner — a performance that reads well in this company.

With a cleaner run and more favourable setup here, she looks capable of outperforming her odds and running a big race.
