- Runner-by-Runner Guide to the Oakleigh Plate
- Who will take out the Caulfield Group 1?
- Hypothetical tops our selections
The Oakleigh Plate is an open handicap race run over 1100m at Caulfield racecourse.
The Group 1 race was first run in 1884 and has been won by some champion sprinters including Wakeful (1901), Schilllaci (1992) and Fastnet Rock (2005).
A race that can throw up a rough result, we have run through the entire field for the Caulfield race to find the winner below with odds for BoomBet.
1. Kallos (15)
Being asked to carry the top weight of 58kg is the Godolphin horse Kallos who was impressive when winning first up at Group 2 level.
He’s had two goes at the highest grade and has failed to placed but has four wins from eight starts at this distance.
2. Asfoora (11)
Has won exactly half of her 16 career race starts including three from four at this track and distance.
Started in the red when resuming in the Rubiton when beaten half a length but I wouldn’t be jumping off just yet considering Uncommon James was beaten in the same race last year before winning this.
Will go straight to the front and be tough to get past.
3. Skew Wiff (3)
The daughter of Savabeel is one of the more interesting runners in the race having scored at Group 1 level in New Zealand already and placed twice as well.
She’s a mare that usually takes a run or two to get going and this may be short of her best but she has the class to be prominent.
4. Sghirripa (13)
A very progressive type who has managed four wins from five starts during this campaign so far, earning a shot at the top level.
His last two wins have been in black type company, the latest of which was by three lengths at headquarters.
Was an impressive trial winner in between runs and has placed in all but one start at this distance.
5. Chain Of Lightning (10)
The Peter Moody trained mare is somewhat of an enigma and she has put in her fair share of ordinary performances.
The fact is that she hasn’t won in over 70 weeks but she does have a good fresh record.
6. Najem Suhail (8)
Was only a lightly raced six-year-old heading into this campaign but the stable is making the most of his good form now!
He has finished in the top two in six of nines starts this prep dating back to July last year.First go at Group 1 level and looks well held.
7. Recommendation (4)
Has managed to place in 12 of 14 career race starts including his last five in a row leading into this debut Group 1 event.
Was beaten less than half a length at group 2 level last time out and is not only well in at the weights but has drawn to get a nice run in transit.
8. Benedetta (8)
This is a quality four-year-old mare which is evident from her six wins from just 10 career starts.
She worked her way through the grades during the spring and finished with a credible fourth in the Silver Eagle.
Is she better suited against her own sex?
9. Brudenell (6)
A winner of three of his last five including a narrow victory first up at Randwick.
That win was only in a lowly benchmark 94 but he drops seven kilos for this and has drawn well.
10. Hypothetical (9)
Closed out the spring with placings in three black type races including a win at Listed level at this track and distance.
Was beaten just over a length behind Kallos first up and drops 4kg.
Looks great value at double figure odds.
11. Lempicka (14)
A progressive mare who put together three wins in a row during the spring, the last of which was at listed level at this track and distance.
Would need to improve but gets in with a light weight.
12. Mornington Glory (7)
A lightly raced five-year-old that has finished in the top two in seven of nine starts this prep.
Finished two lengths off Kallos last start and meets that horse far better at the weights.
13. Quemen (2)
Another progressive type that gets in with no weight.
Has been placed in 14 of 20 career starts and couldn’t have been much more impressive when winning first up here at Caulfield.
14. Rey Magnerio (12)
Has won six of nine in what is his first campaign!
A last start winner at this track and distance and although it’s a huge ask to win a Group 1 as a four-year-old during his first prep, he’s flying!
15. King’s Gambit (1)
The only three-year-old in the race is King’s Gambit who we last saw winning at Group 2 level by two lengths in Sydney.
The sky is the limit for this talented colt and Jamie Kah will steer with just 50kg on his back.
