The Futurity Stakes is run over 1400m at Caulfield racecourse under weight-for-age conditions and is often a launching pad for middle distance horses for the autumn carnival.

The Group 1 race was first run in 1898 and has been won by some champion horses including Phar Lap (1931), Gunsynd (1972) and Mankato (1979,80,81,83).

Only a small field has been assembled in 2024 but we’ve gone through each one below, assessed the odds from ChaseBet and provided our verdict.

1. Mr Brightside (5)

Now a five-time Group 1 winner after taking out the C.F Orr Stakes first up making it four from four at this track and distance.

He had plenty of work to do late in that race but he stormed over the top to score on the line.

The horse he run down, Pride Of Jenni, avoids him in this event and although he’s come up very short, he’s clearly the one to beat.

2. Pericles (1)

Just missed in the rich Golden Eagle to close out his last campaign but there is no doubting he has a tonne of ability.

Was a little disappointing behind Mr Brightside first up but will take plenty of benefit from the run.

3. Munhamek (4)

Gave champion jockey Damian Oliver the ideal send off when weaving through to win at Ascot over the Perth carnival.

Was one of the horses flat footed when Pride Of Jenni took off in the C.F Orr first up but worked well to the line.

Should have residual fitness on his side and drawn well.

4. Dom To Shoot (6)

Scored his first Group 1 win at Ascot beating home Zaaki by the barest of margins in December.

Is yet to win from nine attempts at 1400m but I liked that he had a trial win in prep for this.

5. Nugget (2)

Failed to place during his short three start spring campaign but was far from disgraced in some quality races.

Has the class to be competitive and has performed well fresh in the past.

6. Buffalo River (7)

Loves it here at Caulfield and produced a great performance to finish third behind Mr Brightside in the C.F Orr last time out.

That was a weak Group 1 but you can argue this is even weaker.

If he gets things his own way in front, he’s a knock out hope at a big price.

7. Attrition (8)

Closed out his last campaign with his first win at Group 1 level in the Torah Handicap here at Caulfield.
Only a lightly raced four-year-old with plenty of scope for improvement.

8. Hey Fat Cat (3)

Progressive type who has worked his way through the grades to earn a shot at the highest level.

Has been well beaten in his last couple and would need to improve sharply to be any chance.
