- Who will take out the Caulfield Group 1?
- Lady of Camelot tops our selections
The Blue Diamond is a Group 1 race for two-year-old’s run at Caulfield racecourse over 1200m at set weights.
First run in 1971, the race has been won by some champion juveniles including Manikato (1978), Alinghi (2004) and Sepoy (2011).
We’ve run through every runner in this years edition and our thoughts and betting selections can be found below with latest odds from Elitebet.
1. Rue De Royale (17)
Was beaten just over a length behind Shangri La Express in the Golden Gift at Rosehill in just his second start.
Returned to the races this prep with a second behind Full Lit first up but made up plenty of ground late.
Will be fitter second up and was a ridiculous price when markets opened and has now been well supported.
2. Spywire (18)
Recorded the second win of his short career when dominated his rivals as the short priced favourite on the Gold Coast earning him a shot in the Magic Millions Classic.
The son of Trapeze Artist was caught wide the entire trip in that race and while he was soundly beaten, he managed to finish third.
Freshened up for this and although he has a sticky gate to contend with, he seems over the odds.
3. Bodyguard (6)
Proved he is a young colt with plenty of ability when winning down the Flemington straight last October by two lengths.
Made it two from two first up when winning at Group 3 level at Caulfield beating some good juveniles.
The $1.6 million yearling has drawn to get a nice run in transit and is one of the leading contenders.
4. Coleman (7)
Another unbeaten colt who has won two from two by a combined four lengths over the short course here at Caulfield.
Ran the quickest final 200m of the day last start and breeding suggests he will be better out to 1200m and beyond.
5. Stay Focused (15)
Chased home Bodyguard last start but not a lot went right that day and he was only beaten half a length.
Clearly has a lot of talent and despite the awkward draw, he’s one for the multiples.
6. Dublin Down (3)
Closed out the spring with his debut win down the Flemington straight over 1000m.
Drawn well but concern that he is first up over 1200m in such a high level of race.
7. Traffic Warden (14)
Has yet to miss a place in three career runs including a third first up behind a couple of very smart ones in Prost and Fearless.
Only one of those horses contest this race and if he can continue to improve, can figure here.
8. High Octane (10)
Was excellent on debut when winning over 1000m here at Caulfield despite laying in under pressure.
Had plenty of excuses last time out when beaten three lengths behind Bodyguard and forget he went around.
You’ll be backing him on trust but he’s worth consideration.
9. Zestiman (8)
Winner on debut at Flemington during the spring and was okay on return at Randwick.
Would need to take a considerable leap forward to be any showing.
10. Fearless (16)
Was beaten only a length when making his racing debut in the Group 3 Breeders Plate in September after jumping awkwardly.
No shame in his second when resuming behind Prost and I loved the way he found the line late.
Will need some luck from the barrier but should he get it, look for him late.
11. Hayasugi (11)
Has won both starts so far this prep, albeit by the barest of margins.
There’s no knocking winning form and she is clearly a filly with a fair amount of ability.
12. Eneeza (9)
Peter Moody saddles up this daughter of Exceed And Excel coming off a fast finishing second behind Coleman where she recorded the fastest last 600m and 400m of the race.
Damien Lane will steer from barrier five and she could surprise at double figures.
13. Lady Of Camelot (4)
Didn’t jump well when making her racing debut at Randwick back in September which cost her any chance to go down by half a length.
She returned to the races with a dominate performance at Group 3 level and there not been a better trial for this race in my opinion.
The Gai Waterhouse trained filly has untapped ability and she will land right on the speed from barrier four.
14. Kurtyanagi (2)
Absolutely dominated her rivals at Gawler on debut when winning by three lengths as the odds on favourite.
Followed that effort when beaten by the barest of margins in the Prelude where she was nabbed late.
Is that the right form line for this?
15. Matisse (1)
Yet to win from two career starts but has been beaten less than half a length in both.
Will need to take another step forward but like any of these young horses, anything is possible.
16. Flyer (13)
Comes into this Group 1 race off the back of just the one start but she did win that race at Sandown well.
Looks a little beyond her at this stage of her short career.
