Oliveanotherday can bounce back when a quality field of sprinters tackles the Group 1 Manikato Stakes over 1200m at Caulfield on Sunday.
The Manikato is traditionally one of the highlights of the Moonee Valley spring but shifts to Caulfield this year while The Valley undergoes redevelopment. A capacity field of 13 lines up, headed by Memsie Stakes winner Beiwacht, while Moir Stakes winner My Gladiola, Giga Kick, Jimmysstar, Extragalactic and the progressive Oliveanotherday give the race plenty of depth.
Beiwacht is the obvious horse to beat after returning with an impressive victory in the Memsie Stakes over 1400m at this track. The Chris Waller-trained four-year-old was able to control that race from the front and will be freshened back to 1200m. He draws barrier three and again looks likely to get every chance.
Oliveanotherday had his winning streak ended when beaten as an odds-on favourite in the Bobbie Lewis Quality at Flemington, but I'm prepared to forgive that performance. The Tom Dabernig-trained four-year-old had won five straight beforehand, including an impressive first-up victory in The Heath over 1100m at Caulfield, and returning around a bend should suit.
There are dangers everywhere. My Gladiola comes off a Group 1 victory in the Moir Stakes, while Giga Kick needs little introduction and is capable of producing figures good enough to win this at his best.
Jimmysstar gets blinkers for the first time and can improve sharply on his Memsie Stakes performance, while Extragalactic was excellent when fourth in the Moir and gets James McDonald from barrier two. Beadman is another fascinating runner after producing a huge performance first-up and looks capable of making his presence felt at a much bigger price.
2026 Manikato Stakes Speed Map
The speed map could play an enormous role in the Manikato, particularly with the rail out 13m at Caulfield.
Beiwacht looks the likely leader from barrier three and Nash Rawiller should have little trouble finding the front. Pericles can settle on pace, while Oliveanotherday maps to get a nice run just behind them from barrier five.
Extragalactic has drawn beautifully in barrier two and should be able to settle around midfield without covering ground, while My Gladiola and Jimmysstar are also likely to settle around the middle of the field.
Beadman is expected to get back from barrier 12, while Giga Kick also maps towards the rear despite drawing barrier four.
The rail position is particularly interesting. At the previous two Caulfield meetings with the rail 12m out, all but one winner settled inside the first five in running, and there is even less racing room available with the rail pushed to 13m this weekend.
That potentially gives Beiwacht a significant tactical advantage and is also a positive for Oliveanotherday, who should be able to settle much closer than some of his major rivals.
It will be important to monitor how Caulfield plays through the earlier races before making any firm assumptions, but horses settling on or close to the speed could be difficult to run down.
2026 Manikato Stakes Best Bet
I'm prepared to forgive Oliveanotherday for his last-start defeat and stick with him in the Manikato.
The Tom Dabernig-trained four-year-old had won five consecutive races before being beaten at Flemington and his previous victory in The Heath showed how effective he is around Caulfield.
There is also plenty to like about his third-up profile. At the same stage of his autumn preparation he improved more than eight lengths on benchmark figures when winning over this track and distance.
Barrier five should allow Harry Coffey to settle him within striking distance, which could prove particularly important with the rail out 13m. At around $5.50, he looks worth another chance.
2026 Manikato Stakes Value Bet
Beadman looks a nice value play at around $23 after producing a huge performance when resuming.
The Peter Snowden-trained four-year-old was forced to settle back from a wide barrier in the Concorde Stakes over 1000m but rattled home, producing some outstanding closing sectionals and going around 18 lengths faster than standard benchmark.
He gets out to 1200m second-up and should take improvement from that performance.
The obvious concern is the map. Beadman has drawn barrier 12 and is likely to settle towards the rear, which could leave him with plenty to do if the 13m rail heavily favours those racing close to the speed.
That is factored into the price, though, and if the track is allowing horses to make ground by the time the Manikato is run, he has the closing speed to make his presence felt.
