The 2025 Empire Rose Stakes (1600m) is the premier mile contest for fillies and mares and often delivers one of the most tactical races of Cup Week.
This year’s edition is deep and classy — a blend of seasoned Group 1 stars and rising milers ready for their Grand Final.
Fangirl ($3.30) heads the market and deserves favouritism on class alone. The four-time Group 1 winner was 6th in the King Charles Stakes last start but still produced a +9.1 benchmark run and closed better than most in the worst part of the track. Back against her own sex and with James McDonald aboard, she is primed to explode third-up.
Stablemate Leica Lucy ($6) was a real eye-catcher in the Toorak Handicap (1600m)(3rd, 14.5 lengths faster than benchmark) and profiles as the one peaking now at Flemington. Her Let’s Elope Stakes (1400m) and Toorak runs both rate top three in this field and the mile is her sweet spot.
Damask Rose ($10) had no luck in the same race and can improve sharply with a clear run for Blake Shinn, while Pride of Jenni ($8) adds the speed factor — the Feehan winner will ensure a truly run race.
However, the soon to be retired fan favourite, may not run as connections decide whether or now to bow out a week later on Champions Day instead.
Idle Flyer ($6.50) brings red-hot form from Sydney with three wins from four and a career-best 11.7 lengths faster than benchmark in the Angst Stakes. If the leaders overdo it, she’s the one screaming home late. Splash Back ($21) was excellent in the Tristarc when unsuited by tempo and may get the perfect trail from barrier five.

Pride Of Jenni leads as always, likely joined by Lazzura pressing forward. Splash Back, Leica Lucy, and Damask Rose sit midfield, while Fangirl and Idle Flyer bide their time toward the rear. Expect a strong tempo — the perfect set-up for a backmarker to swoop down the outside late. However, if Pride Of Jenni is not in action, this might suit those with a better sit-sprint, such as Fangirl.
2025 Empire Rose Stakes Best Bet
Leica Lucy ($6) – Has been building beautifully toward this third-up mile assignment. Her Toorak and Let’s Elope sectionals were elite and she’ll love the big track and likely tempo. Draws to get cover midfield and finish off hard.
2025 Empire Rose Stakes Value Bet
Splash Back ($21) – Moonee Valley Group 2 winner who keeps improving each run. Her Tristarc second was better than it looked and she’ll thrive at 1600 m with a genuine pace. Begg has set her for this all prep — a must for exotics and each-way players.
