The premier sprint race for the three-year-olds is the Coolmore Stud Stakes run down the Flemington straight over 1200m on Victoria Derby Day.

Run under set weight conditions, the race was first run in 1863 and has been won by some outstanding three-year-old’s including Vain (1969), Manikato (1978), Alinghi (2004) and more recently Sunlight (2018).

We’ve offered our thoughts on every single runner below with best odds available from PuntNow.

1. Shinzo (4)

The 2023 Golden Slipper winner is continued the trend of Slipper winners to fail to win another race post that win although he’s only had the two starts since.

He finished ninth in both the Golden Rose and Everest and will now tackle his own age group down the s=famous straight at Flemington.

Chris Waller has been glowing in his assessment of the horse during the week but I’m happy to take the horse on at his current price.

2. Cylinder (14)

Was run down late in the Golden Slipper by Shinzo but unlike that horse, he has returned much better as a three-year-old.

He kick started this campaign with back to back wins and showed plenty of grit to be beaten a small margin in the Golden Rose.

Couldn’t have been much more impressive tackling the older horses in The Everest where he was beaten just over a length and I see no issues with the straight course.

3. Don Corleone (3)

This horse is going far better than his from on paper suggests and has not been far away in all four runs.

He rocketing home late at Caulfield last start to just miss showing an impressive turn of foot and while I’m not sure he is a winning chance in this race, he can run better than his odds suggest he will.

4. Veight (18)

Has three wins from six career starts and simply ran into one better in the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas last start.

I’m always concerned about horses dropping back in distance from 1600m for this race and treating this as an afterthought.

Has won at Flemington before and while he clearly has ability, I prefer others. Blinkers go on.

5. King’s Gambit (2)

Was well beaten down the Flemington straight first up at Listed level before bouncing back to the Group 2 Roman Consul Stakes at Rosehill.

Is yet to miss a place in six career starts including a third in the Golden Slipper and should be ready to peak at this stage of his prep.

6. Steparty (1)

Won his first five starts including the first two this campaign before finishing third in the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas.

Like I mentioned, I’m not a fan of horses tackling this race as an afterthought however this colt has a stack of natural ability and speed.

He’s won down the Flemington straight before and I’m of the opinion he is a better sprinter.

Great each way value at his current quote. Blinkers go on.

7. Arkansaw Kid (16)

Placed in the Blue Diamond as a two-year-old but was well beaten in the Golden Slipper.

Overcame a protest to win at Listed level last time out and has a fair amount of upside.

8. Snapback (13)

Won a maiden at Goulburn to kick start this campaign and was then beaten three lengths behind Militarise in the Golden Rose.

Didn’t have a lot of luck last weekend in Sydney but found the line well to finish third.

He will find this race tough but he certainly shouldn’t be $151.

9. Scheelite (11)

This colt by Real Steel is going better than his form on paper suggests.

Got to within half a length of Steparty in the Guineas Prelude, recording the best late sectionals of the race.

This was never his grand final but if he’s still going well enough, can fill a placing.

10. I Am Unstoppable (12)

This colt is such a professional and is yet to miss a place in five career starts.

He had no luck at a vital stage in the Poseidon Stakes at this track two back but once he found clear running, he savaged the line late to just miss behind the smart Archo Nacho.

Can settle just off the pace, pounce late with Blake Shinn on top and looks great each way value at double figure odds.

11. Ozzmosis (6)

Had won three in a row leading into the Roman Consul Stakes last start where he was beaten by King’s Gambit.

Clearly has a lot of talent but I’m concerned with 1200m.

12. Mexico (10)

Put in a peak performance in the Roman Consul last start to finish second.

Was beaten 4.5 lengths here at Flemington previous to that and while he’ll need a spike in ratings he is over the odds at $100.

13. Butch Cassidy (19)

Hasn’t been far away in all three runs this prep including getting to within half a length of Cylinder in the Run To The Rose.

Love the fact that he’s had a big gap in between runs and he should settle right on the speed.

14. Moravia (7)

A very progressive son of Snitzel who has placed in three of four career starts.

Was beaten by the barest of margins behind Cylinder in the Run To The Rose and this is his ideal distance in my opinion.

Is another that represents great each way value if things pan out in the run.

15. Celui (5)

Has won three of five overall including his last two in a row.

His latest win was in a benchmark 70 and he would need to improve dramatically to feature in a race of this quality.

16. Nadal (15)

The Maher and Eustace trained Nadal is a very exciting colt with a sharp turn of foot which was evident when storming home in the Run To The Rose.

Nothing went right for him in the Golden Rose when he failed to find clear air but I loved his most recent jump out here at Flemington.

There looks to be a fair amount of speed in this race which will set it up perfectly for him to storm over the top at a huge price.

17. Tiz Invincible (9)

Put together three wins in a row to start this prep, two of which were at Group 2 level.

Stepped up to 1600m in the Group 1 Flight Stakes last start and finished sixth but she is much better suited over the sprint distances.

Harder against the boys and she may have already peaked this prep.

18. Stretan Angel (17)

Is yet to finish outside the top two in four career starts and is a last start winner down the Flemington straight.

She is a filly with plenty of ability and with even luck she’ll be right in the finish in a really competitive race.

19. Treasurway (8)

Has failed to place so far this prep at a much easier grade.
